We are thrilled to share that Avon Protection's Materials Innovation team attended the “Searchlight” Science & Technology Capabilities Exhibition at DSTL Porton Down Science Campus on 11th July 2024. Including presenting during the “Elevator Pitch” session showcasing some of the novel work on permeation resistance that is happening at Avon Protection. This prestigious event united key players in science, technology, and defence to foster innovation and collaboration.   Porton Down, located in Wiltshire, is home to the UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), alongside Porton Biopharma Ltd. The Porton Science Campus, established in 2018, has evolved into a major centre of excellence in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, and Defence Technologies. This year’s exhibition showcased advancements across various fields, supported by significant funding and collaborative opportunities from the UK Government.   Our Materials Innovation team, represented by Principal Scientist Richard Moon, and Avon Senior Global Product Manager - APR Mike Lee, highlighted a mixture of Avon Protection and Team Wendy protective products and services. ASK AVON: How do I make sure I have a proper seal on an APR? ANSWER: First and foremost - facial hair, sideburns, bangs, and headwear may prevent a protective facepiece from forming and/or maintaining a tight-fitting seal on someone’s face. To ensure you have a proper seal, you should perform a negative pressure test. This test, when done diligently, provides reassurance and safety in your respirator use. For the C50 and FM54, you must ensure you have one side of the mask with a 40mm cap in place before starting. The negative pressure test can be performed by putting the mask on your face, breathing out, then blocking the inhalation valve, and taking a deep breath. For the FM50 with filters fitted, you will need to cover the inlet ports of both filters and breathe in. The mask should collapse to the face, and while holding breath, the respirator should remain collapsed. THERE BE RIVER DRAGONS: On Saturday, 6th July 2024, a team from Avon Protection headquarters in Wiltshire took on Dragon Boat racing on the River Avon to support the Felix Fund - the bomb disposal charity. The British Army, Royal Navy Divers, Metropolitan Police, and local rowing clubs were among the 13 crews who rowed hard throughout the day.   The event featured timed heats and a final, with the Avon Protection crew securing a very respectable 3rd place against some fierce competition. It was a fantastic day for all involved, filled with excitement and camaraderie.   The Dragon Boat race was in aid of the Felix Fund, a charity supporting Military and Counter-Terrorism Police bomb disposal teams.
