Berkeley Space Center’s ‘Central Green’ will be the beating heart of our campus. 💛🔭 Intended to be a social magnet and meeting point for all users, the Central Green is a pedestrian-friendly, car-free zone that sits amidst a thoughtfully arranged network of buildings, promenades and paths. The sun-filled space and surrounding ‘Solar Shade Canopy’ provide innovators and the community with a direct connection to nature, and areas for relaxation, rejuvenation and socialization. 🌞 #DesigningBerkeleySpaceCenter University of California, Berkeley SKS Partners

The Polaris Dawn mission takes commercial space exploration to new heights! In just five days, the crew set two new records — the first-ever commercial spacewalk and the highest Earth orbit since Apollo. These milestones mark a new chapter in space exploration history. The future of space travel is bright, and Berkeley Space Center is thrilled to witness and partake in it. 🌟 To read more about the Polaris mission from USA TODAY:

Advancing tech innovation and sustainability for a better society at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Merced
I had the privilege of attending the Bakar ClimatEnginuity Hub Symposium on Climate Change Technology at UC Berkeley on Friday. It was truly inspiring to witness the diversity of climate expertise and perspectives, both from the speakers and the engaged audience. Kudos to the event organizers for curating such an impressive lineup and creating a space for meaningful discussions! A highlight for me was hearing from Professor Daniel Kammen on the critical importance of climate justice. It was also exciting to see so many UC Berkeley teams—QB3, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute, UC Berkeley College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy, Berkeley SkyDeck, and the Berkeley Space Center—collaborating on innovative climate solutions. This collective energy gives me hope for the impactful changes we can make in the climate space. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateJustice #Innovation #Collaboration #UCBerkeley Camille Crittenden, Alexandre Bayen, Rich Lyons, Janny Manasse, patrick gutteridge, Susan Jenkins, David Schaffer, Darek DeFreece, Jennifer Chayes, Carl Blumstein, Laurent de Janvry, Hussein Orekoya R.Eng. Welcome to “Designing Berkeley Space Center” — a new monthly series deep-diving into Berkeley Space Center’s design from the perspective of our world-renowned development team. For our first installment, we’re looking at the project from a bird’s eye view. Every aspect of the site’s building placement, massing and form has been carefully curated with insight from University of California, Berkeley, SKS Partners, HOK and Field Operations. From sun patterns to wind flows, Berkeley Space Center’s Master Plan celebrates California’s mild Mediterranean climate. 🌿🌎 With strategic circulation, massing and landscaping, Berkeley Space Center has the ability to enhance air and water quality, biodiversity and health and well-being. The result? A transformative space where the natural and built environment can coexist. berkeleyspacecenter.com #DesigningBerkeleySpaceCenter

A team of Berkeley researchers, led by Ph.D. student Taylor Waddell, sent their 3D printing technology to space for the first time as part of the Virgin Galactic 07 mission. 🚀🛰️ Their next-generation microgravity printer — dubbed SpaceCAL — spent 140 seconds in suborbital space while aboard the VSS Unity space plane. In that time span, it was able to print four test parts from a liquid plastic called PEGDA. “SpaceCAL performed well under microgravity conditions in past tests aboard parabolic flights, but it still had something to prove,” said Waddell. “This latest mission, funded through NASA’s Flight Opportunities program and with support from UC Berkeley College of Engineering and the Berkeley Space Center, allowed us to validate the readiness of this 3D printing technology for space travel.” Read more about the zero-gravity trip and the project: https://lnkd.in/gwcSNNjC

Berkeley Space Center is an opportunity to redefine how large-scale developments are designed, constructed, and managed—not just from the ground up, but from the underground up. This project plans to achieve an 84% water diversion rate and will not use natural gas for power generation. Its design will enable the use of recycled water for both landscaping and building interiors, as well as stormwater retention. The landscaping and maintenance will contribute to healing groundwater aquifers through the planting of trees and other vegetation. Kristina Covall and I had a great opportunity to participate in discussions about future developments at the NASA Ames Research Center, including how our own Berkeley Space Center project contributes to the vision of Ames as a hub for innovation. It's exciting to see how all the pieces will come together, and we're especially looking forward to making the plans a reality!
👍 Collaboration. Teamwork. Partnerships. THIS is what’s critical to achieving the mission! Great kickoff to our Master Planning workshop #2, focusing on our research park & developments across the NASA Ames Research Center & Moffet campus! Thanks to our partners for the open dialogue & for getting us off on the right foot — I’m excited for a great week ahead! Let’s Go! 🚀
