Despite what you might hear from anti-mining groups, the Flambeau Mine out of Ladysmith, Wisconsin was a success and is a great example of responsible industry. The Flambeau Mine was a Copper mine and it was located along the shores of the Flambeau River and operated from 1993 to 1997 and finished reclamation by 1999. Flambeau was the first mine to earn permits and operate under Wisconsin’s stringent mining laws. The WDNR holds Flambeau as an example of a successful operation and successful closure. The reclaimed site is now home to acres of wetlands, hundreds of species of plants and animals, miles of hiking trails, and five miles of equestrian trails open to the public year-round. Last week, Senators John Barrasso of Wyoming and John Hickenlooper of Colorado reintroduced the bipartisan Mining Schools Act. The Mining Schools Act was originally introduced by Senator Barrasso and former Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia in May 2023, and the legislation passed the Senate with bipartisan support last September. This critical bill aims to strengthen America’s mining workforce by investing in mining education, ensuring we have the talent needed to meet the growing demand for minerals and energy resources. By establishing a grant program for mining schools, the legislation will support student recruitment, research, and workforce development—key steps toward securing our nation’s energy and mineral independence. Strengthening domestic mining education is essential to reducing reliance on adversarial nations and maintaining U.S. leadership in responsible resource development. Last week, President Trump’s executive order prioritizing domestic critical mineral production is a vital step toward strengthening our national and economic security. By reducing reliance on foreign sources, this initiative will enhance supply chain resilience, drive technological innovation, and create American jobs. Idaho is positioned to play a key role in this effort with two significant projects: ✅ Bunker Hill Mining’s permitted silver and zinc mine in Kellogg, which will supply essential metals for clean energy technologies, transportation, and infrastructure. Zinc is also a critical mineral for national defense, used in anti-corrosion coatings for military vehicles, munitions, and equipment. Its role in galvanizing steel makes it vital for reinforcing military infrastructure, ensuring durability and longevity. ✅ Perpetua Resources’ proposed Stibnite project, which aims to responsibly produce antimony—a mineral critical to U.S. defense. Antimony is used in armor-piercing ammunition, explosives, and flame-retardant materials for military vehicles and aircraft. It is also essential for energy storage technologies, including large-scale batteries needed for military operations and grid resilience. With China and Russia controlling the majority of the world’s antimony supply, establishing a domestic source is vital for U.S. security. Better In Our Back Yard applauds the executive order’s focus on streamlining permitting, expediting priority projects, and fostering public-private partnerships. These actions will unlock Idaho’s rich mineral resources, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while fueling economic growth and innovation.

Highland Copper Company Inc.'s Copperwood Project is a prime example of how domestic mineral development can drive economic growth while securing the resources our nation relies on. With the recent push by the White House to expand domestic production of Copper, projects like Copperwood in the U.P. of Michigan will play a vital role in strengthening supply chains, reducing reliance on foreign imports, and supporting national industries that depend on copper for renewable energy, infrastructure, and advanced technology. Copperwood will bring in much needed high-quality jobs and long-term investment to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, supporting local businesses and strengthening regional communities. By prioritizing responsible, sustainable mining, we can balance environmental stewardship with economic prosperity, ensuring a stronger, more resilient future for American industry and innovation. Better In Our Back Yard congratulates Talon Metals for its recent discovery of a significant 8.25-meter massive sulphide intercept at the Tamarack Nickel-Copper Project in central Minnesota that was announced earlier this week. This milestone underscores the tremendous potential for domestic production of high-grade nickel, copper, and cobalt — all critical minerals essential for national defense, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. The White House’s recent Executive Order, “Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production” (March 20, 2025), reaffirms the urgent need to strengthen America’s mineral supply chains. Domestic production of nickel, in particular, is vital to our national security, as it is a key component in military-grade stainless steel, EV batteries, and advanced aerospace applications. Talon’s progress at Tamarack demonstrates that the U.S. can meet this need by responsibly developing its own mineral resources, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, and securing a more resilient future. Talon’s ability to rapidly identify and delineate new mineralization zones, such as this intercept located below the known resource area, highlights the scalability and growth potential of domestic projects. With follow-up drilling underway, the Tamarack Nickel-Copper Project stands to become a key contributor to America’s critical mineral dominance. Last week, President Trump’s executive order prioritizing domestic critical mineral production represents a vital step toward strengthening our national and economic security. By reducing reliance on foreign sources, this initiative will enhance supply chain resilience, drive technological innovation, and create great paying American jobs. Minnesota is poised to play a leading role in this effort with three significant projects that are all targeting Copper, Nickel, Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals: ✅ Twin Metals Minnesota LLC’s proposed copper-nickel-cobalt mine near Ely, offering a domestic source of critical minerals needed for the clean energy transition. ✅ NewRange Copper Nickel’s NorthMet project, set to responsibly produce copper, nickel, and other essential metals for transportation, infrastructure, and defense. ✅ Talon Metals Corp.’s proposed high-grade nickel mine in Tamarack, which would supply a key material for electric vehicle batteries and defense systems. Better In Our Back Yard applauds the executive order’s focus on streamlining permitting, expediting priority projects, and fostering public-private partnerships. These actions will help unlock the North Star State’s rich mineral potential, fueling innovation and reducing America’s dependence on imported resources.

Thank you to Mayor Reinert of Duluth for joining Better In Our Back Yard's Ryan Sistad and Joshua D. Mellott of Blackline LTD at BIOBY's 5th Annual Winter Dinner last January. We appreciate the insightful conversation on the positive impact responsible industry has on the region and cities like Duluth. "Duluth today is still a community that makes things. Whether it's a paper plant making finished products like toilet paper & tissues, whether it's a steel plant that's still producing steel, or Cirrus manufacturing airplanes. We make things and the stuff that comes together in those things has to come from somewhere, so why would we not want to responsibly do that in our region and then have the follow on effect in our community." Roger J Reinert - Mayor of Duluth, MN A special thank you to John Dukich and his team for helping set this up!
