Three words no one wants to hear: “You have cancer.” I was meeting my new team at BetterUp in person for the first time when I got the news. Navigating a deeply emotional and personal diagnosis is difficult; navigating it in the workplace is something else altogether. I understand why nearly a quarter of women with cancer decide not to share their diagnosis with their colleagues. Today, I’m cancer-free—early detection truly saved my life. I’m grateful for the friendship that came when my colleagues at BetterUp created space for me to be real with them. We don’t often talk about the hardest things in our lives at work, but when we do, we are rewarded with the thing that matters most in this sometimes too short life: deep connection. In this Fast Company, I had the privilege of reflecting on my own personal experience of living and working with breast cancer—and I’ve compiled a few thoughts on the dos and don’ts of supporting a colleague with cancer. Thanks for reading. https://lnkd.in/dt5d-NXh #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #breasthealth #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersupport #breastcancertreatment #fightbreastcancer #PinkOctober #pinktober #thinkpink #womenshealth

Today is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme was chosen by a global vote open to the public: “It’s time to prioritize mental health in the workplace.” The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that 92% of people want to work for a company that provides mental health support. According to our data, we know that 66% of employees feel burnout several times a month or more. Yet more than two-thirds of employees don’t feel like their organizations care about their well-being. Where do you start when the workplace — and the world — all feel a little too overwhelming? Well, we’ve compiled a short guide with some tangible steps you can take to actually make mental health a priority at work. What other tips do you have?

We’ve got some discouraging news (and yeah, we know that’s not the best way to start a Monday). Your managers are probably stressed out. According to Gartner research, managers are accountable for 51% more responsibilities than they can effectively manage. The impact? ▶️ 54% are suffering from work-induced stress and fatigue ▶️ 44% are struggling to provide personalized support to their direct reports ▶️ 1 in 5 five managers say they prefer to not be a people manager if given a choice Oof. 🤔 What if leaders started looking at their managers as the difference makers in their organization? 🤔 What if leaders invested in the tools and resources needed to unlock manager effectiveness at scale? 🤔 What if leaders recognized that the traditional learning and development modules for manager effectiveness are simply just not working in today’s landscape? Before you dive headfirst into your morning coffee, there’s an antidote to help unlock the potential within your managers. It’s AI-powered—and fueled by the science of coaching. It’s here. And ready to help. Tap the link in the comments to check it out.

If we know one thing about the future, it’s this: Change is necessary. Change is vital. Change can unlock transformational outcomes for your business and your people. So, what happens when your people are sick of change? If you’re a manager, you’ve likely heard variations of this in your one-on-ones. If you’re a business leader, you’ve likely talked about effective change management tactics in your leadership meetings. If you’re a regular employee, you’re likely wondering: OK, what’s next? What else is going to change? Yes, change is hard. The science backs it up. According to recent research published in Forbes, while your organization’s success may depend on change, it’s critical to understand employees’ emotions as they’re working through it. We know that high levels of anxiety and stress can produce low levels of buy-in, cooperation, and enthusiasm. Translation: Decreased team performance and productivity. But there are ways to build momentum and sustainability for change in your organization—and it starts with investing in manager effectiveness. When organizations invest in their managers, BetterUp data shows that managers and their teams show: ⚡Increased resilience ⚡Better agility and adaptability ⚡Increased strategic alignment ⚡Overall better team performance Want more?
