But don’t just take our word for it. The Validation Institute recently validated bitewell’s FoodHealth Score, i.e. our 0-10 food scoring system that rates a food’s effectiveness in positively impacting a person’s health condition, and the health outcomes that come with it. To quote Linda Riddell, the Validation Institute’s Chief Data Scientist: “Our review found that bitewell’s development of the FoodHealth Score used credible data sources and appropriate statistical models. The Score was shown to have a strong link to health outcomes, such as blood pressure and blood glucose (HbA1c) and thus achieved FoodMed Certified for outcomes from Validation Institute.” To learn more about the FoodHealth Score and how it’s improving health outcomes for people with high blood pressure, cholesterol, A1c and more – you can read the full report here: https://bit.ly/43pRXlg

When 75% of our healthcare spending is due to preventable diseases that can be managed with food, somewhere along the way… we lost our way. Dining room tables have been ditched for drive-thrus, and the term “whole foods” has become more synonymous with a grocery store chain than actual nutritious food. Meanwhile, workers are on sick leave due to diet-related illnesses… racking up a whopping $153 billion in lost productivity. Where did we go wrong, and how can employers help get their employees’ health and their insurance premiums back on track?  Spoiler alert. bitewell has an answer for that. Big thanks to Employee Benefit News and Deanna Cuadra for their feature on bitewell's mission to give employees access to nutritional food as a healthcare benefit. Check out their article below to find out why we believe food as medicine… is the future of health.

Do you want to sell more food? Make sure people know it's healthy. In a simple test conducted by the International Food Information Council, 55% of people chose a snack labeled “healthy” over an identical snack without that label. And people are willing to pay for it. 40% of those people would pay 30% more for the "healthy" swap. 15% of those people would pay as high as 50% more. The pre-requisite for paying higher prices? A clear labeling system that helps people understand if a food is healthy, or not. Sounds like the bitewell #FoodHealthScore to me.... (source: IFIC 2023 Food Health Report)

What you eat has a profound effect on your health. In fact, food is one of the most impactful factors in a person’s overall health and wellness. That's why the research consistently shows that dietary habits not only influence disease risk but also have the ability to offer strong protective qualities against acute and chronic conditions. For example: 🥕 A study by Tufts University found that a 30% Medicare and Medicaid subsidy for fresh vegetables and fruit could prevent 300,000+ premature deaths from cardiovascular events. 🥕 A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that offering nationwide medically tailored meal benefits to individuals with diabetes, heart disease, or cancer could save more than $180 billion in medical costs. 🥕 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina published data in the New England Journal of Medicine that found members with Type 2 diabetes in Affordable Care Act plans could save $139 in total medical costs per member per month if they were enrolled in a food as medicine delivery program. Of course, knowing this information doesn’t always translate into eating foods that are best for you. Schedules get busy. Stress happens. And it’s not always clear what’s good for you and what’s not. That’s why through the FoodHealth Score at the digital food farmacy, we do our best to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.
