Along with our partners and coauthors at SURVICE Engineering and the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center, BluePath's research director Eric Hundman, Ph.D. has a new publication out on how the Department of Defense conceptualizes low-cost "attritable" UAVs! DoD has made substantial progress on *countering* small, inexpensive drone attacks, but remains unsure about how best to adopt and produce them for the U.S. military.
China specialist, geopolitical analyst, and Mandarin speaker with more than 15 years of experience as an open-source researcher, writer, public speaker, and editor.
Attritable, low-cost UAV systems have been used in a broad range of roles in the Ukraine war, and the U.S. Department of Defense has shown keen interest in both countering expendable drones and developing its own attritable UAV platforms, most notably through the new Replicator Initiative. In a new State-of-the-Art (SOAR) report for the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center, Deanna Milonas, Taylor Knight, and I investigated how DoD is conceptualizing attritable UAVs and which companies and platforms are involved in the effort to deploy them with the U.S. military. tl;dr: DoD still has not agreed on a clear definition for "attritable" drones, but there is general agreement that they will be important in future warfare and many such platforms are already deployed or in production.

Chinese sanctions on US drone maker Skydio could impact the Ukraine war effort; the CEO pointed out to customers that "If there was ever any doubt, this action makes clear that the Chinese government will use supply chains as a weapon to advance their interests over ours." The company doesn't anticipate finding another supplier before the spring.

Late last week, our research director, Eric Hundman, Ph.D., spoke with Radio Free Asia about continuing reports of deserters in the PLA. If you read Chinese, take a look - offers some useful context about how common such issues are and what they mean for the force more broadly.

Spoke with Radio Free Asia earlier this week about the PLA's persistent problem with deserters. The force wants everyone to think it is just a problem with a few recalcitrant individuals, but my own research (link in the comments) has found that is unlikely to be the case.
