Teaching at West Point with AI 👩🎓🤖 Recently, I returned to West Point to teach cadets - one of my absolute favorite things to do. But this time was different. For the first time ever, I incorporated AI into my teaching process. Here's how I used AI throughout my teaching journey: 1. Class Preparation   - Transcribed textbook images   - Generated ideas for responsible AI integration   - Created and revised Expected Learning Outcomes   - Rewrote class instructions 2. Cadet Preparation   - Created a personalized "tutoring bot" to answer questions 3. In-Class Teaching and Learning   - Used AI to analyze student-bot chats to identify learning gaps   - Focused classroom discussions on challenging concepts identified by AI 4. Assessment and Analysis   - Used a "reading bot" to quiz students after readings   - Generated a flawed case summary for class analysis   - Created hypotheticals for group discussion and AI-assisted analysis The Challenge: How to use AI to enhance critical thinking and comprehension, not replace them. Some takeaways: 1. AI raised the average: The students who interacted with the personalized AI bot before class had better understanding of the materials and none of them received lower than a B on their follow-up response essay. (Question: Would those be the same students who are better prepared anyway?) 2. To get the most out of AI required more than AI: Students needed to have a basic understanding of the subject matter in order to know what questions to ask of AI to get help. 3. AI required me to change: I had to purposefully alter how I taught to incorporate AI in ways that enabled critical thinking by the cadets. 4. Personalization made a difference: The cadets expressed surprise at the quality and helpfulness of the answers provided by the personalized AI tutoring bots. 5. AI is not a substitute for human teaching: AI helped the students obtain a base level of knowledge, but true understanding of the material required classroom discussion and teaching. Last week, we officially kicked off the Campus AI Leadership Program with two exciting meetings! With students from all over the world, we worked hard to accommodate everyone's time zones, and although not all council members could attend, it was a fantastic start. We had a great time getting to know one another, sharing how AI has impacted our educational journeys, and brainstorming projects for our council members to dive into. Our members are eager to get to work on these real-world projects, where they’ll gain valuable experience while contributing to the future of AI in education. The enthusiasm to shape the future of BoodleBox and the global education system is inspiring, and I can't wait to see what this talented group accomplishes.
