Oregon is one of the first U.S. states to extend #Medicaid coverage to incarcerated patients 🎊 90 days before re-entry into the community, patients will have their insurance reinstated: avoiding dangerous gaps without coverage. “50% of people in OR prisons have been diagnosed with a disability or mental illness, which makes uninterrupted care really important,” according to Oregon Health Authority. “This funding will be a huge tool for #jail and #prisons in helping those incarcerated receive proper discharge planning for successful reentry into the community, ensuring the continuation of care for one of our most vulnerable populations.” This will also help people with #opioid use disorder stay safe at a time when risk of overdose is significantly higher — and reduce more barriers to long-term #recovery. ❤️🩹

Did you know 40% of Boulder patients live in #rural areas? #Telehealth plays a vital role in connecting people to addiction medicine specialists. Boulder clinical leader Drew Mossman shares firsthand experience: 💭 “I currently see patients in remote communities like Southeast Ohio and Eastern North Carolina. Many people there resort to local “cash-only” clinics or community buprenorphine [i.e., obtaining medicine prescribed to someone else] to get by. When I worked at a brick-and-mortar center, people travelled over 2 hours to be seen. They used insurance for rides, or paid people to take them. This resulted in missed visits — and ultimately, many falling out of care. The successes with telehealth is most apparent from the word-of-mouth referrals in tight-knit communities. I can't tell you how many times I've heard a patient say "I just told my [friend/parent/sibling/partner] about you guys. We didn't even know this was possible!" Patients are able to keep jobs because they aren't burdened by travelling to get medication, and are able to get psychiatric care under one “roof” (which is also difficult in remote areas). It's always a pleasure to reconnect with Forbes Under 30 listers who are taking on big challenges in healthcare. Last week, I caught up with Stephanie Strong. While many founders chased DTC dollars during the coronavirus-fueled telehealth boom, Stephanie decided to help people with addiction disorders in the government-funded Medicaid program get access to treatment. Her startup Boulder Care offers virtual addiction treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorder, as well as co-occurring conditions, in three states: Oregon, Washington and Ohio. Around 11,000 patients in the program get access to peer recovery specialists, clinicians and medication-assisted treatment, like buprenorphine. With $35 million in Series C, Strong hopes to be in 10 states by 2026. “We like to go into states that have large rural populations, where we can pretty immediately help expand access to care for people who have no other in-person treatment facilities,” she told me. ⭐ Reminder: We're on the lookout for the next cohort of Under 30 healthcare founders.
