Break Through Tech held its first ‘Connect’ event graciously hosted by our long time and iconic corporate partner Accenture - who not only supported this event in their flagship New York City headquarters - but also brought in 3 of their amazing corporate leaders - Laura Peterson, Senior Managing Director and Americas Operations Lead, Teresa Tung, Senior Managing Director and Global Lead of Data Capability and Lee Barrett, Managing Director, North America Data and AI Advisory Lead to talk to almost 100 of our Break Through Tech fellows. On top of all of this - our keynote speaker was none other than THE Allie K. Miller, the #1 most followed voice on AI and sought after speaker by top corporations. Thank you SO much to Accenture for everything you do for #womenintech and for Break Through Tech - it’s companies like yours that walk the talk that will bend the curve towards gender equity in tech. The latest report from Business-Higher Education Forum, Expanding Internships: Harnessing Employer Insights to Boost Opportunity and Enhance Learning, highlights the critical role #internships play in preparing students for their careers. In 2023, while 3.6 million students participated in internships, another 4.6 million were left without opportunities—often due to barriers like race, socioeconomic status, and educational background. This gap has a lasting impact on students’ career prospects, particularly for underrepresented groups. At Break Through Tech, we are working to address this disparity through our programs, which give students the hands-on experience they need to secure full Summer internships and, ultimately, launch successful careers in tech. As more companies recognize the importance of work-based learning, the demand for programs that prepare students for real-world office environments is growing—especially for those from communities who may not have access to these opportunities. This excellent Work Shift article and interview with the always insightful Tara Orlando underscores the urgency of investing in everyday office skills, which are essential to the early talent pipeline.
