From Tuesday, October 8 – Friday, October 11, 2024, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) sponsored the Grace Hopper Celebration 2024 (GHC), an inclusive technology event that takes place annually in the US. DBT’s GHC exhibition showcased international perspectives and opportunities in tech. The UK Government brought a delegation of UK female tech company founders to Philadelphia for a series of regional meetings in addition to the convention. The BABCPHL was honored to partner with DBT, the Philadelphia Department of Commerce, the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia (WAC), The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) to offer a meaningful introduction to the region. Upon arrival, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia market overviews were presented by local economic development partners during a morning introductory session at the WAC office. Following this welcome session, delegates and regional representatives walked to the Comcast Media and Technology Center for a presentation by Comcast NBCUniversal LIFT Labs, Comcast’s startup engagement and accelerator group. The delegates were then treated to lunch by PHLCVB at the iconic Reading Terminal Market. After lunch, the UK tech founders traveled to CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center) in University City where they heard from a panel about tech companies and women in tech in Philadelphia. After this session the group was transported to the Navy Yard Philadelphia to visit the urban reconversion and tech ecosystem building, where the Director of Communications for the Navy Yard at Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation spoke to everyone. On Wednesday evening, October 9th DBT and the WAC hosted a networking reception for the UK delegates and regional business executives, members and friends of the BABCPHL and other partners. Attendees included UK government representatives, tech companies, local and regional economic development organizations, service providers, investors/VCs, and UK/US companies who have expanded internationally. Hannah Young, His Majesty’s Consul General to New York presided over the meeting, along with co-host Lauren Swartz, President & CEO, WAC, and Councilmember Rue Landau, a civil rights and housing attorney, a public school parent and the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Philadelphia City Council. It was an honor to welcome the UK delegation of women tech leaders to Philadelphia. On Wednesday, September 18, 2024 the City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation hosted the Inaugural State of the Airport showcasing Philadelphia International Airport's ongoing growth and innovation. “Recap, renew, and reimagine” was the tagline introducing the report.   Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia’s Mayor, emphasized the airport's significant economic impact, noting its role in providing jobs and capital investments while serving approximately 80,000 people daily. This activity not only supports tourism but also positively impacts state and local revenue. Atif Saeed, the CEO of the Philadelphia Department of Aviation, reiterated the Airport’s commitment to sustainability and leadership in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, alongside a massive cargo expansion project that will further enhance PHL’s operational capabilities. Council President Kenyatta Johnson celebrated the Airport's success in building economic growth within the City, specifically highlighting the emphasis on DEI. Philadelphia International Airport creates thousands of jobs for minority communities and helps support the proliferation of black and brown owned businesses.   Nate Gatten, Executive VP of American Airlines and keynote speaker, delivered a hopeful message, stating, “I can say confidently that American and Philadelphia will continue growing together." As a Club Level and Board Member of the BABCPHL, American Airlines is one of the largest stakeholders in Philadelphia, directly connecting PHL with over 80 domestic cities and 17 European destinations. He highlighted that PHL has outpaced other hubs in growth, making it a home for American Airlines. Interestingly, American Airlines serves as the second largest employer in the City of Philadelphia. Nate announced the exciting addition of direct flights to Edinburgh, Scotland, and Milan, Italy, in 2025, marking two new dots on the map from PHL. The addition of another direct flight to the UK provides enhanced accessibility for business development opportunities between our two cities. He also introduced a new American flagship lounge, coming next year, enriching the travel experience for American Airlines passengers traveling through PHL. To cap off remarks, Nate mentioned American Airlines’ 120 nonstop flights out of PHL, and mentioned the Airline is still actively looking to add more destinations for the people in and around the Philadelphia area (including those who stop over for a connecting flight).
