  • Improved identification of challenging organisms In the vast biological tapestry of our planet, fungi hold a unique place with an estimated 1.5 million species. Usually these sometimes invisible and challenging organisms live in harmony with animals and humans, causing no harm. However, for those with a compromised immune system, these silent companions can turn into dangerous foes, causing severe diseases.   Most fungal infections, or mycoses, are typically transmitted from the external environment. They can infiltrate our defenses through direct contact with spores, transmission from infected individuals, or indirectly via contact with contaminated materials. The concern increases when we consider animal fungal infections due to their potential to cross species barriers and infect humans. Indeed, zoonoses, diseases transmitted from animals to humans, are reported as the primary instigators of fungal infections in humans.   This alarming reality has ignited a spark in the field of veterinary research, leading to the development of innovative methodologies for rapid identification of fungal species. The ability to detect fungal pathogens swiftly and accurately at the species or strain level is often the key player for efficient disease surveillance and for organizations championing animal welfare. It paves the way for the implementation of effective management strategies, ensuring the health and safety of both animals and humans.   Dive into the depths of these methodologies in our latest News Digest: https://lnkd.in/edSUjX6i #BrukerMID #microbiology #MALDITOF #massspectrometry

  • Last week we talked about sample prioritization and if the MALDI Biotyper® has a feature for that. The correct answer is YES, the MALDI Biotyper® provides a target prioritization feature for urgent samples. Never heard about this? Well, then listen closely 😉 We know how important it can be to measure some urgent samples as quickly as possible. Therefore, you can interrupt a run at any time and squeeze in your urgent samples, having the results within a couple of minutes and then continue to measure your previous target seamlessly. Maybe you never needed this feature due to the high acquisition speed itself of our star. As a full MBT Biotarget 96 only takes around 5 minutes to deliver the identification results (note: with the latest MBT Compass HT software), one might say it is so fast there is no need to interrupt it. But for those cases you need to, you absolutely can do so! Are you going to try out this feature?   #BrukerMID #microbiology #GOTsirius #MythMonday

  • Pathogen confirmation made easy! In the fast-paced world of food manufacturing, swift and accurate confirmation of foodborne pathogens is paramount. Real-time confirmation and identification results from a range of agar plates and for multiple colonies in one run confers allows for critical time savings. Great, isn’t it? Our solution – the MALDI Biotyper® – has been validated as a complete food microbiology solution in accordance with ISO 16140-6:2019 and the MicroVal rules and is included in the OMA book of AOAC International. Curious to learn more? Want to get insights straight from our experts? We invite you to join us at our Bruker booth 500/502 at AOAC in Baltimore and to follow our tech talks. We’re excited to meet you there! See you soon! #BrukerMID #microbiology #AOAC2024 #foodsafety

  • 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 Typing: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy to Battle the Nosocomial Threat? 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴, a multi-drug resistant yeast, is responsible for numerous infections since a few years, posing a serious nosocomial health risk as this pathogen can persist on human skin and in hospital environments for an extended period, negatively impacting hospitals and patients alike.   Its rapid spread, especially among the ill or immunocompromised, coupled with a prevalent multi-drug resistance is a dangerous mix. Given the identification challenges this species presents to traditional methods, it’s no surprise that the WHO has placed this species on the fungal priority list. Regarding Italy, 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 was first identified as being responsible for invasive infections in a hospital in the Liguria region in 2019 and later in 2022 in the Piedmont region.   A recent study from 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪 𝘦𝘵. 𝘢𝘭 focuses on the application of FT-IR spectroscopy to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among isolated strains from an Italian 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 outbreak. The authors describe an innovative FT-IR based statistical-mathematical approach without any pre-knowledge from molecular methods. This method could become an alternative other typing techniques such as WGS which are not commonly available in microbiology laboratories due to their costs, turnaround time, and the need for expert personnel.   Access the paper for more insights and results here: https://lnkd.in/exyi5neR   #BrukerMID #spectroscopy #publichealth

  • It’s Monday again – everyone’s favorite day of the week 😉 – which means we have another statement for you! Let’s talk about sample prioritization. Such a feature could be crucial for several reasons.   Especially in clinical microbiology, time is often of the essence. Rapid identification of the causative agent can lead to more effective treatment strategies, potentially improving patient outcomes. In a busy laboratory, each day a large number of samples is processed, which can make it difficult to prioritize urgent samples on a busy instrument. In cases of highly infectious diseases, rapid identification can be crucial in implementing appropriate infection control measures to prevent the spread of the disease. For patients in critical condition, rapid identification of microorganisms can guide targeted antimicrobial therapy for a better outcome, as well as reducing the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics helping to combat the rise of antibiotic resistances. While these points highlight the importance of sample prioritization it is also crucial to integrate it in the least disruptive way of the standard workflow with little to no impact to other samples of the staff’s routine.   Given that, and your experience, we like to challenge the statement that the MALDI Biotyper® has a sample prioritization for urgent samples. What do you think, is it a myth or the truth?   #BrukerMID #microbiology #MALDITOF #massspectrometry
