Publication Highlight // Earlier this year we published a paper recording of a school of scalloped hammerhead sharks (S. lewini) in the deep waters off Grand Cayman, where we also describe a recent, concomitant increase in numbers of the species, and its critically endangered congener, the great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran), around the Cayman Islands. Observations of scalloped hammerheads on deep-water BRUVS were made on several occasions with one group of at least 11 swimming at a depth greater than 600 feet. It appears this species may be slowly re-occupying the area, selecting and using deeper waters to school. This shows the continued importance of exploring the deep and extending protection further beneath the waves. We embrace innovative marine science and digital storytelling to create solutions for a changing ocean.
About us
At Beneath The Waves, we work towards protecting our ocean and its inhabitants. What started out as predominantly a shark research not-for-profit in 2013, has evolved into something bigger. Today, we bring people from all corners of the world together to create protected marine areas and advance the conservation of threatened marine species--and in turn, ensure the survival of our own species in the years to come. We're generating ideas based on our research that are innovative, forward-thinking, fresh, and impactful.

Incredible work from the team during our most recent expedition in TCI with our partners at Big Blue Collective!! Congratulations to Anne L. Haley for another strong dataset for her PhD! 🦈 🌊
In September, the ocean is at her warmest and often her calmest. We found the perfect weather window for the latest installment of our shark conservation research with the team from Beneath The Waves. Read all about it on our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/epVGwBQU Special thanks to Lead Researcher Anne L. Haley, and to the Turks and Caicos Islands Government Department of Environment and Coastal Resources. #TurksandCaicosIslands #Caribbean #Sharks #OceanConservation #Research

BTWaves is thrilled to be part of the Search for Lost Sharks! 🦈 💦 Bringing our experience in innovative deep-sea technologies and partnering with Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF), Minorities in Shark Sciences, PADI AWARE Foundation, Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance, and ReShark, we’re joining forces with Re:wild to help rediscover sharks, rays, and chimeras that have been lost to science for over a decade. From the glowing-eyed Crying Izak catshark to the elusive New Ireland Stingaree (last seen in 1825!), this initiative unites researchers, local communities, and citizen scientists to bring these rare and cryptic species back into the spotlight. Last week at Climate Week NYC, Dr. Austin Gallagher, Founder and CEO, participated on a panel with the Atlantic Council during the Global Future Forum to discuss ocean security. Watch the recording below!
“The appetite for partnership and for multilateralism in the ocean space is growing.” Last week at our Global Future Forum, we hosted a conversation on our ocean’s future and how the international community can sustain the world’s most important resource. Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation Amb. Jessye Lapenn, Ireland’s Maritime Affairs Attaché to the EU Eoin Leahy, Founder and Chief Scientist of Beneath The Waves Austin Gallagher, Managing Director of TMP Public Ben Bowie, and Atlantic Council board director and The Wilson Center senior fellow Sherri Goodman, discussed effective ocean diplomacy, safeguarding the biosphere, the blue economy, food security, and scientific discovery. The event was generously supported by Rock The Ocean Foundation, Beneath The Waves, and TMP. Read the key takeaways and watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/e_BPQxev

The BTW team had a hugely successful expedition to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to spend two days tagging and gathering behavioral and physiological samples of the Mola mola, otherwise known as the sunfish. ☀️🐟 We still have so much to learn about these species; here are a few of the genetic mysteries we hope to solve as our research progresses: - Their important role in regulating jellyfish populations - How they managed to grow so large in size and why - Why other organisms choose to set up permanent residence on their skin - How they’ve evolved to withstand body temperatures as low 12°C/53.6°F As ecosystems around the globe adjust to the changing climate, it’s hugely important that we crack the genetic code of rare oceanic species like the Mola mola so we can help them continue to thrive. Keep an eye out for more findings from our expedition!

Our mission wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of leading women in ocean science, and we feel beyond lucky to be able to champion their work and amplify their voices. That’s why the BTW team is particularly thrilled to announce that Dr. Katy Ayres has agreed to join our ranks as our newest Research Scientist! Please join us in welcoming her to our community and our family. 👏🎉 #newhire #oceanscience #femaleleaders
