C16 Biosciences produces high-performance biodesigned ingredients for the personal care, home care, and food industries.

About us

C16 Biosciences uses innovative processes found in nature to brew sustainable alternatives to palm oil. Palm oil is everywhere: it’s in our food, clothes, shampoo, and even the fuel that powers our cars. But this $61 billion industry has drastic environmental and societal costs: rainforests from Costa Rica to Indonesia are destroyed to make way for oil palm tree plantations, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and destroying habitats for people and endangered wildlife along the way. But palm oil doesn't have to be a problem. There remains an urgent need for consumers and companies alike to switch to environmentally conscious, sustainable palm oil products. C16 was founded with the objective of creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to conflict palm oil. By offering producers, refiners, traders and consumers of palm oil an opportunity to invest part of their production into bio-based oils and sustainability efforts, our aim is to reduce the environmental footprint of palm oil production and protect precious natural land, wildlife, and resources in the process. We've developed technology to brew a sustainable alternative to palm oil from microbes. Fermentation is a well-proven commercial process that has been used for centuries to convert raw materials into consumable commercial products consumed by billions of people every day. We believe that brewing palm oil like beer is the best and most likely path to developing a truly sustainable palm oil alternative. Our palm oil is sustainable -- it doesn't involve deforestation, endangering precious animal species, or forcing inhumane labor practices. The result is a world where consumers can enjoy the products they love without worrying about the dangerous practices involved in making them.

Over the summer, The New York Times' David Wallace-Wells put out an urgent notice around the need for a "food transition" at the speed and scale we've seen implemented around the energy transition that could deliver "better nutrition more equitably and more affordably to more people, all without devastating ecosystems or polluting local environments or pushing the planet further into climate disarray." This food transition won't happen without heavy innovation and heavy investment (like we've seen in the energy transition). The statistics Wallace-Wells cites are shocking: - About three-quarters of all global agricultural land is vulnerable to substantial climate disruptions. - The effects of climate change have reduced the growth of overall global agricultural productivity by between 30 and 35 percent. The climate threats to come loom even larger. - According to the World Resources Institute, we may need to add almost two Indias to the world’s existing farmland to meet food needs in the second half of this century. — but adding that farmland means cutting down forests, which store carbon, in order to graze more animals, which produce carbon. -Over a 30-year time horizon, the insurer Lloyd’s recently estimated a 50 percent chance of what it called a “major” global food shock. If you are passionate about the opportunity to innovate within food systems to mitigate climate risk and you are in our hometown for #NYClimateWeek, please come by the event we are co-hosting with FoodxClimate on Wednesday at the C16 Biosciences HQ. We're excited to announce that C16 has been selected by the United States Department of Defense for an award via the Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP) as part of The White House Executive Order 14081, "Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy," aimed at bolstering America's bioeconomic strengths while helping the Department achieve advanced defense capabilities. This is an exciting step forward for both the industry and for C16, and we will use this funding to plan a commercial-scale FOAK facility that would establish domestic production of sustainable, edible oils from yeast. https://lnkd.in/eZMnuTDV

On World Orangutan Day, we want to amplify Rhett's words about why conservation and biodiversity matter. "Orangutans remind us that conservation isn't just about saving a species; it's about understanding the intricate web of life, where every thread, no matter how small, plays a role in the survival of the whole. Imagine, for a moment, standing in a rainforest at dawn, the air thick with the scent of earth and the sound of life stirring all around. In the distance, you notice a flash of red—the unmistakable movement of an orangutan, deliberate and graceful, despite the daily struggles it faces. This image is more than a snapshot of wildlife; it is a symbol of resilience, of a fight for survival that mirrors our own."

Today is World Orangutan Day 🦧 On this World Orangutan Day, it's worth pausing to reflect on the profound connection between these creatures and the ecosystems they inhabit. Orangutans, our distant relatives who share 97% of their DNA with us, inhabit a world vastly different from ours, yet one that mirrors important aspects of our own. In the dense, rain-soaked forests of Borneo and Sumatra, orangutans navigate a delicate balance with nature. These forests are more than just their home; they are vital to our planet's ecological function. These forests moderate local temperatures, sequester vast amounts of carbon, and play a key role in regional water cycles. Like us, the survival of the orangutan is inextricably linked to the health of these forests, and, by extension, to the well-being of our planet. Yet the challenges are immense. Habitat destruction, driven by human activities, has sharply reduced the orangutan population over the last century. Their numbers have been further diminished by hunting and the relentless demands of the wildlife trade. Still, they endure. As we observe World Orangutan Day, it's important to consider the broader implications of their struggle. Orangutans remind us that conservation isn't just about saving a species; it's about understanding the intricate web of life, where every thread, no matter how small, plays a role in the survival of the whole. Imagine, for a moment, standing in a rainforest at dawn, the air thick with the scent of earth and the sound of life stirring all around. In the distance, you notice a flash of red—the unmistakable movement of an orangutan, deliberate and graceful, despite the daily struggles it faces. This image is more than a snapshot of wildlife; it is a symbol of resilience, of a fight for survival that mirrors our own. In the quiet persistence of the orangutan, we might glimpse our own ability to adapt and survive in a changing world. Their future, like ours, depends on the choices we make today. EU Rules Begin To Bite! An excellent update on Europe's latest sustainability regulations from Tim Mohin, partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The adoption of the Eco-design Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) is a big deal, signaling the start of a new era in responsible business practices and in reporting requirements. With deadlines looming for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), it's clear that companies need to step up their game. Despite some international pushback, kudos to the EU for staying firm. Tim Mohin breaks this all down in his excellent weekly newsletter. It's worth a read. #ESPR #EUDR #CSDD #CSDR #DefendEUDR #Deforestation #PalmOil

🟢 Far-reaching and complex EU sustainability rules might still seem like a challenge for a future date, but they are starting to kick in now, and companies are adapting. The CSDDD and ESPR have now been adopted into the EU’s legal charter, and there are less than six months left before companies must comply with the CSRD and EUDR. Plus, US presidential candidate Kamala Harris is focusing on climate issues on the campaign trail, which is garnering some support while giving Republicans a talking point to paint Harris as too liberal. Science Based Targets initiative issues a mixed message on carbon offsets, saying they are ineffective but leaving the door open for their future use in meeting climate goals. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has released guidance on integrating climate risk reporting into financial reporting. The guidance is open to public consultation until November 28. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) have released a mapping tool to ensure continued interoperability and reduce double reporting. #TNFD #GRI #CSDDD #EUGreenDeal #CSRD #EUDR #election24 #IASB #climaterisks #SBTi

Kudos to Nestlé, Mars, Ferrero, and Tony's Chocolonely for their leadership in support of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). While some are calling for delays, these industry leaders are embracing the challenge and recognizing the urgent need to address deforestation in supply chains. Their proactive stance sets a powerful precedent for corporate environmental responsibility. As the EUDR December 30th 2024 compliance deadline approaches, this commitment underscores businesses' crucial role in combating deforestation and climate change. A call to action for all companies: prioritize sustainable sourcing practices. Our planet depends on it. #Sustainability #EUDR #CorporateResponsibility #DefendEUDR #Deforestation #PalmOil https://lnkd.in/e5Vcf-Na

We support Fern NGO and other global NGOs in supporting President Ursula von der Leyen's call to fully implement the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)! Protecting our global forests is crucial for combating climate change and preserving biodiversity, and the EUDR has already shown positive impacts by improving forest monitoring and law enforcement. Swift action on this policy demonstrates the EU's commitment to environmental leadership. By standing firm on the EUDR's implementation, we are investing in a more sustainable future for future generations. The EUDR is already making a difference, and we can't afford to hit pause now. #DefendEUDR #EUDR #Deforestation #PalmOil

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: it’s time to defend the #EU deforestation regulation by ensuring timely & full implementation. Forest destruction is increasing across the world, fuelling the climate crisis and collapsing ecosystems. The #EUDR a key part of efforts to halt #deforestation and tackle the #ClimateCrisis. It is already improving forest monitoring & forest law enforcement in key producer countries. Delaying the Regulation would be a disaster for global forests and for the EU’s reputation. Environmental policy must not be determined by self-interest. Global forest protection is the key to a cleaner, greener, more prosperous future for the next generations. President von der Leyen, it’s time to fully implement the EUDR! #DefendEUDR
