🦇✨ #BatWeek Spotlight ✨🦇 During the Gold Rush, miners created a landscape filled with mines. While these sites were once used for extracting California’s rich resources, they’re now critical habitats for many of our bats! 🦇 These man-made “caves” are an unexpected sanctuary, providing a safe haven for bats across the state. To protect both the bats and public safety, CalConservation and partners have installed unique structures, like bat gates and cupolas, that allow bats to come and go freely while keeping people out of these abandoned mines. Every gate or cupola helps secure vital bat habitats and keeps humans safe! #CalConservation #BatWeek #CaliforniaBats #WildlifeHabitat #MineSafety California Natural Resources Agency Bat Conservation International Bureau of Land Management U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) National Park Service

About us
The Department of Conservation provides services and information that promote environmental health, economic vitality, informed land-use decisions and sound management of our state's natural resources. With a team of scientists and other dedicated professionals, the Department of Conservation administers a variety of programs vital to California's public safety, environment, and economy. The services DOC provides are designed to balance today's needs with tomorrow's obligations by fostering the wise use and conservation of energy, land and mineral resources. Division of Land Resource Protection (DLRP) The Department of Conservation administers or supports a number of programs designed to promote orderly growth in coordination with agricultural endeavors. Key DOC tools include conservation easement grants, land tax incentives, and farmland mapping and monitoring. Division of Mine Reclamation (DMR) The reclamation of mining land through The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act. Balancing the regulation of mineral production important to California with protecting the environment. California Geological Survey (CGS) Scientists from DOC gather data on earthquakes and map earthquake faults and related hazards. This information is used to make buildings and structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes, minimizing loss of life and property damage. California Geologic Energy Management (CalGEM) CalGEM prioritizes protecting public health, safety, and the environment in its oversight of the oil, natural gas, and geothermal industries, while working to help California achieve its climate change and clean energy goals. State Mining & Geology Board (SMGB) The board serves as a regulatory, policy and appeals body representing the state's interest in geology, geologic and seismologic hazards, conservation of mineral resources, and reclamation following surface mining activities.

#Shakemap #Earthquakes #CISN Shakemaps are generated by California Integrated Seismic Network partners after earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 and greater. These maps are very important to understand the general distribution and intensity of shaking, and potential for damages after an earthquake. Happy to present mapping that depicts cumulative shaking related to magnitude 4.0 and greater earthquakes over the last 42 years. We're celebrating a significant milestone – and a historic moment of healing and justice -- as 320 acres of #ancestralland have been returned to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, bringing the total restored to 600 acres this year! This land return is a powerful example of collaboration between the State of California and the tribe, highlighting a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and the recognition of the tribe's deep historical connection to the land. The restoration of these ancestral lands also strengthens efforts to protect and conserve vital cultural and natural resources in the Coachella Valley. This transfer is part of California’s broader initiative to correct historical injustices against Native American tribes, aligning with the state’s #30x30CA initiative to protect 30% of lands by 2030. #LandBack

📣Attention, geology enthusiasts! In celebration of #GeologicMapDay, explore our Unified Geologic Map of the Moon! 🌒 Created by the USGS Astrogeology Science Center, in collaboration with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Lunar and Planetary Institute, this first-ever comprehensive map reveals the moon’s entire surface geology, combining Apollo-era data with recent satellite missions. Not only does it show the 4.5-billion-year history of our lunar neighbor, but it’s also a key tool for future human missions and an invaluable resource for scientists, educators, and space enthusiasts.
