Gynecologic, breast and lung cancer awareness months are all coming up, and many of you are asking how to better incorporate cancer risk assessment into your services this fall — without overloading your IT and Marketing teams. That’s why I wanted to personally share Nebraska Medicine's story with you. Rachael Schmidt, APRN, Program Director for Cancer Survivorship & Cancer Risk and Prevention led Nebraska's novel approach to cancer risk assessment. Within just two months, she helped identify nearly 300 people eligible for a #lungcancer screening — and four patients with early-stage lung cancer. I’m so proud of what she’s accomplished and wanted to share her story as context so you can envision a path towards a similarly successful campaign this fall. Because Nebraska’s statewide lung cancer screening rate is just 3.7%, Rachael Schmidt, APRN-NP, partnered with CancerIQ to initiate a lung cancer prevention campaign focused on cancer risk assessment outside of the clinic. Specifically, the campaign targeted Nebraska Medicine patients with a recorded history of smoking. Those patients received patient portal messages, emails or fliers in the mail encouraging them to initiate and complete a cancer risk assessment. The results invigorated me. There was an astounding 29% response rate, with 298 patients deemed eligible for and who underwent a low-dose CT scan and shared decision-making appointment. Of those, four people and their families were saved from the heartbreak of a late-stage, difficult-to-treat lung cancer diagnosis. With our technology and toolkits, you too have the capability to stand up similar campaigns in time for fall’s awareness months without significant lift from your internal teams. We’ve adapted our platform so patients can take a risk assessment in their home and receive personalized results and tailored education so they feel comfortable taking the next steps. This is a huge leap toward meeting patients where they are and truly understanding cancer risk across populations.
