It was a beautiful day yesterday to finally officially establish Canopy Aerospace HQ in the heart of Douglas County as the newest advanced manufacturing company. Canopy develops highly-engineered, critical components and materials to advance performance capabilities of the industrial base in sectors such as space, defense, energy, and electronics. In the span of a year, we converted a drywall manufacturing facility to a premiere aerospace & defense manufacturing facility able to handle production of some of the most advanced materials and components. We had a great list of guest speakers who shared kind words on Canopy and their vision for the industry. Thanks to Mason Angel of Industrious Ventures for sharing his belief in our company and recognizing our accomplishments over the last year. We've secured $7.5M in U.S. Government Contracts in a year, a nearly 2:1 ratio to $4M in private venture capital raised to date. Robert Beletic for championing Canopy for the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade where we also received an Advanced Industries Grant. Ellie Reynolds for leading economic growth at Douglas County Economic Development Corporation and advocating for companies like Canopy to grow and flourish here. Commissioner Abe Laydon of Douglas County for sharing his vision and support of expanding the aerospace & defense footprint here. Canopy would like to welcome Sean Ryan as an experienced Research and Development Engineer to the team. He specializes in new materials and process development, project management, and composites manufacturing. Sean comes to us from Western Washington University where he managed the Polymer Materials Engineering (PME) industry-sponsored research program. While there, he supported research efforts that delivered sustainable and innovative solutions to aerospace industry partners’ materials and process challenges. Some examples of projects he’s worked on include the development of a thermoset composite ablative TPS compound for 3D printing, chemical recycling of cured epoxy-based aerospace composites for carbon fiber recovery and reintegration as a fiber reinforced thermoplastic injection molding resin, and recycling of high-performance thermoplastic waste for reuse in aircraft interiors. In addition to his technical responsibilities, Sean supervised and mentored students in the PME research program. He brought a compassionate, lead-by-example style to motivate students towards advanced degrees and careers in STEM. Across his career, Sean has developed a broad yet nimble skillset having investigated electron transfer kinetics in novel solar cells using pulsed laser systems, designed and built prototype off-grid refrigeration systems for agriculture, and provided project management and engineering support for successful delivery of opto-mechanical assemblies. He is excited to bring his multi-disciplinary experience developing novel material systems, prototypes, and manufacturing processes to the Canopy team. Sean holds his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Washington, Master of Science in chemistry from University of Colorado Boulder, and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University. The Canopy team recently had a chance to travel down to Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico - the home of the US's Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC). Our innovations for thermal protection systems will benefits our nation's next-gen strategic systems: -'smart', sensor-embedded thermal protection systems that allow for real-time health monitoring of hypersonic systems and capture of flight data to enable next-gen modeling and simulation tools -robotic automation for coatings application, lowering scrap rate and enabling 'elasticity' within the supply chain to match unpredictable national security demand signals Thanks to Maj Gen John Newberry for hosting our team and learning more about our innovations, along with our partners at Air Force Research Laboratory (Space Vehicles Directorate) for supporting development of these next-gen technologies. More to announce in the future related to work we are doing in this field. 🚀 We were also able to visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque and learn more about our nation's historical efforts to mature strategic systems for deterrence. Canopy would like to welcome Vijay Shravah as Head of Federal Capture to the team. Vijay brings over 18 years of experience in the aerospace and defense sectors, with a diverse background at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Lockheed Martin, and several early-stage space companies. He has also ventured beyond aerospace as the founder of Fansure, a sports analytics company. Vijay's extensive government experience includes leadership roles in business development at Starfish Space and TRL11, and overall on track to secure over $10 million in government contracts. At Lockheed Martin Space, he managed investment strategies and R&D budgets for major military satellite programs. His tenure at NASA involved supporting numerous missions as an aero/fluids analyst and systems engineer within the Launch Services Program. Vijay holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Georgetown University. As Head of Federal Capture at Canopy, Vijay will drive the identification of new business opportunities, secure government and commercial contracts, and cultivate strategic partnerships to propel Canopy's growth. He chose Canopy for its promising trajectory as an early-stage company and its commitment to becoming a leading manufacturer of critical materials across aerospace and defense sectors. June was a busy birthday month for the Canopy team. We celebrated the birthdays of John M. Howard, Vanessa Montoya and Jose Juarez with a delicious BBQ. It was a great opportunity for the team to connect and enjoy some quality time together.
