Last week at Tectonic Space Summit, our CEO Even Rogers joined Michelle Volz (Pax VC), Jason Kim, (Firefly Aerospace), and Gokul Subramanian, (Anduril Industries) to discuss the evolving challenges of space as a contested domain. As threats from near-peer adversaries evolve, our ability to rapidly train, test, and respond to these threats is crucial to keeping the U.S. ahead. Private space companies bring an incredibly nimble and necessary approach to defense tech development, and we are excited to be leading the conversation alongside companies like Firefly and Anduril.

Building any sort of startup is hard, but companies working to transform physical industries face an especially rough road. However, transforming physical sectors means accepting that discomfort is part of the process, says Eclipse Partner Seth Winterroth. If you want to rebuild critical industries like defense, transportation, or manufacturing — which not only impact everyone’s lives, but also form the basis of a nation’s GDP — you must accept that it takes a certain amount of failure in order to learn. Space is not a sanctuary. We echo National Security Space Association (NSSA)’s recommendation and applaud their recently released position paper to boost investment in space tech. Now is the time for the U.S. to invest in new space defense technologies that meet the threats posed by near-peer adversaries like Russia and China. The U.S. Space Force’s newly released Space Threat Fact Sheet provides an unclassified but urgent look at the growing threats in orbit. China and Russia continue to expand counterspace capabilities, from jamming and cyberattacks to hypersonic weapons and orbital anti-satellite systems designed to disrupt and degrade U.S. space superiority. China is also rapidly improving its space capabilities to track and target U.S. military forces. Space is no longer a sanctuary. Every day, threats to critical satellites could jeopardize global security, commerce, and military operations.
