Happy Halloween from The Carroll Center for the Blind! In the spirit of the season, our clients had a great time carving pumpkins, creating some spooky and fun designs while practicing their non-visual skills! Staff joined in on the festivities with hot cider and donuts, courtesy of our wonderful HR team. October is recognized as White Cane Awareness Month—a time to celebrate independence and raise awareness! On Friday, our clients and staff joined the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind and other members of the blind and visually impaired community to celebrate White Cane Awareness Day at the Massachusetts State House. We refreshed our knowledge of the history of the white cane and the “White Cane Law”, heard inspiring stories from the community, and more. A standout moment was when Officer Robert Figueroa was honored for risking his life to assist a pedestrian and his guide dog at a busy intersection in the North End. Witnessing their emotional reunion was deeply moving. Fun Fact: Did you know that the first Community Mobility Program in the world was established at the Carroll Center for the Blind in 1952 to teach safe travel skills using the white cane? The program played a pivotal role in promoting the use of the white cane as a key tool for safe and independent navigation. It was groundbreaking at the time and set the foundation for modern orientation and mobility training programs used globally today! #WhiteCane #WhiteCaneAwarenessDay #Community
