Each October, we honor our respiratory therapists for the vital role they play in caring for patients throughout our health system. Respiratory Therapists are responsible for helping patients with lung diseases or disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia, prematurity, lung cancer, and other respiratory related illnesses. Due to lack of awareness in regards to the career field, Respiratory Therapists are in extremely high-demand, with industry growth projected to be at least 23 percent over the next decade according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Future respiratory therapists can earn an associate’s degree along with an entry-level certification to begin a career in the field, making the job accessible to those who are not planning to attend a 4-year university. Respiratory Therapists work with patients of all ages, from premature infants to the elderly, helping them breathe more easily and improving their quality of life. Along with the Respiratory Therapists that work throughout our hospital, the providers and staff at Catawba Valley Pulmonology also work with patients who have a respiratory related disease or illness. In October, we celebrate Pediatric Nurses Week, Perinatal Nurses Week, and Midwifery Week! This week's mission is to promote care for women and children, and celebrate our staff who are dedicated to promoting optimal health and providing excellence in nursing care of children and their families. The Pediatric Department at CVMC is an environment designed to reassure children. Along with a professional staff with many years of experience in treating children, this environment encourages a speedier recovery. Each staff member in our Pediatric Department have received specialized training in caring for children, and all registered nurses in the Pediatric Department are or are becoming certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. CVMC’s Perinatal Nurses take care of women, their newborns, and their families through pregnancy, birth, and up to a month after the baby arrives. They provide prenatal and postnatal care for mother and baby and educate the whole family on how they can help during this special journey. They assist physicians and nurse midwives during labor and delivery and in managing a newborn’s care right after delivery. Our midwives, who provide both hospital-based care and see patients at Catawba Valley Maternity Services, have many years of experience and provide the best high-touch care to our patients. Their passion for making sure every mother has the birth experience they desire is their trademark. Catawba Valley Medical Center is grateful and fortunate to have knowledgeable and dedicated nurses and midwives who provide care to our local expecting and postpartum mothers. In remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, Catawba Valley Health System leadership and employees took two opportunities to recognize the victims and responders on that fateful day. First, during the hospital’s daily safety huddle, a moment of silence was held at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center North Tower. Also, at 9:03 a.m. – when the second plane hit the South Tower – a large group gathered at the hospital’s flagpole, where it was lowered to half-mast, and a moment of silence was observed. Aaron Macemore of CVMC Spiritual Care Services offered a prayer and Jim Meade and Chuck Scronce, veterans who serve the health system, added thoughts this morning on what Patriots Day means to them and the people they knew who were affected. Please join us in taking this day to remember those who died, as well as families and friends of the victims.
