Overseeing the food stock at a school in Benin, Aminou Bio Yarou tracks rations for the volunteer cooks using a digital app, ensuring precise measurements. Without this technology, errors occurred, and food quantities were measured with makeshift tools like recycled cans. Today, thanks to the app, discrepancies are minimized, reducing stress and ensuring accurate food distribution. The app also prevents fraud, guaranteeing transparency in food management and deliveries. Aminou says, “At first, the work was more difficult, as there was no application, no scales and calculation errors were possible. Now, thanks to the application and digital tools made available to us, errors have been minimized, if not virtually eliminated. What’s more, the digital application is well-designed and prevents all kinds of fraud. “

Laughing and smiling. That’s what you’ll see Maria Sánchez Cobo, 24, do a lot while leading a Learning Circles in Nebaj, Quiché, Guatemala. Having fun makes it easy for her to make connections with the younger girls in her Circle, which consists of girls 10-14 years old. As a professional nurse, Maria teaches them about physical, emotional, and social abilities that improve their health, lifestyle and nutrition. “We know very well that in the communities, many times girls do not leave their homes, do not get involved in activities … because of certain taboos that exist in the community. However, these spaces allow them to express themselves and get involved,” Maria said. CRS with @The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teamed up to reach 1,500 adolescent girls and young women in Nebaj municipality to improve their health and nutrition because malnutrition is a problem. “The girls want to learn, they want to develop their skills and abilities and through this they approach our project to learn how they can improve their lifestyle, their health and their nutrition.”

Did you know that a growing body of evidence strongly supports the powerful effect of integrating social cohesion and justice in development and humanitarian programs? A range of studies — including an impact evaluation, multiple mixed-methods studies, and a qualitative meta-review — indicate that social cohesion and justice improve outcomes in a wide range of sectors, as demonstrated in the two highlighted studies below. If you weren’t able to attend our Strengthening Development Through Social Cohesion: Evidence, Insights and Strategic Partnerships event at the Keough School of Global Affairs in D.C., then check out the summary of findings from recent research and learning initiatives below!
