If you’ve ever parented an adolescent girl, you know very well that they tend to listen to their friends more than they do their parents. 😉 That’s why in Guatemala we use learning circles, led by young women, to teach girls about nutrition. Young women lead the group, and they get together with adolescent girls to teach them things like trust, social relationships, the importance of taking iron-folic acid supplements and other skills and information that girls need to know. Anemia levels are higher in girls due to menstruation, that’s why it’s crucial for them to take iron and folic acid supplements. This is all part of a program to help improve nutrition in adolescent girls in Guatemala. Adolescent girls need adequate and diverse diets to meet the dramatic growth demands of puberty and reduce the risk of malnutrition.

The Danger of Assuming We Know: Why Community Conversations Matter in Development Planning As development professionals, we've all been guilty of it: rushing into project planning without truly listening to the communities we serve. The pressure to respond quickly to funding opportunities can lead to a top-down approach, ignoring the very people we're trying to help. But here's the hard truth: our past experiences and assumptions are not enough. Human beings and their communities are dynamic, complex, and ever-changing. True impact comes from learning together with the communities we serve. Collaboration, not assumption, is key. It's time to shift our approach: 1. Prioritize community conversations. 2. Listen deeply to local perspectives. 3. Co-create solutions together. Let's break free from the "we know" mentality and embrace the power of collaboration. #CommunityLedDevelopment #CollaborativeApproach #DevelopmentEffectiveness #ListeningMatters #CRS

Overseeing the food stock at a school in Benin, Aminou Bio Yarou tracks rations for the volunteer cooks using a digital app, ensuring precise measurements. Without this technology, errors occurred, and food quantities were measured with makeshift tools like recycled cans. Today, thanks to the app, discrepancies are minimized, reducing stress and ensuring accurate food distribution. The app also prevents fraud, guaranteeing transparency in food management and deliveries. Aminou says, “At first, the work was more difficult, as there was no application, no scales and calculation errors were possible. Now, thanks to the application and digital tools made available to us, errors have been minimized, if not virtually eliminated. What’s more, the digital application is well-designed and prevents all kinds of fraud. “
