In 1881, Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay was ignored by the medical community when he made the connection between yellow fever and mosquitos. At the time, dirty air and clothing were thought to cause the devastating disease. It wasn’t until years later that the U.S. Army turned to Dr. Finlay for help during the Spanish-American War. By applying his ideas for mosquito control, they reduced yellow fever outbreaks among the troops.
