Today the American Alliance of Museums announced forty museums participating in the upcoming Museum Social Impact in Practice (MSIIP) cohort, which will launch in Fall 2024. MSIIP responds to the challenge museums of all sizes and types share when trying to understand and articulate their value to society. After a competitive application process, the museums selected to participate represent 25 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. We are proud to be one of the chosen-- the only museum in the Carolinas to be selected!

Saving and Sharing Charlotte's History
About us
The Charlotte Museum of History saves and shares the Charlotte region’s history, connecting the past to current issues and opportunities. We believe a shared understanding of the past can enrich the community’s future, and we work to tell the stories of all parts of our community and all those who have inhabited our area. Museum programs and exhibits explore important civic themes and how their meaning has evolved over time, including ideals of liberty, freedom, equity, justice, democracy, and citizenship. The museum sits on an eight-acre wooded campus in fast-changing East Charlotte. It’s the site of the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County, the Rock House built circa 1774 for the Hezekiah Alexander household. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a designated local landmark, the house is Charlotte’s only remaining structure from the days of the Revolutionary period. Nearby are a relocated barn dating to the era, a reproduction log kitchen, and a reconstructed two-story springhouse. Tours of the site and museum programs highlight how people lived during that era and tell of the many cultures that came together to build Charlotte, including the stories of Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities. Mission & Vision The Charlotte Museum of History is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization that interprets and preserves Charlotte’s unique history, enriching the community through shared understanding of the past and inspiring dialogue about the future. Vision To engage the community in the history of our region through exhibits, programming, dialogue, stories, and preservation. Guiding Principles Engaging, interactive educational programs Inclusivity and outreach to Charlotte’s diverse communities Collaboration and community partnerships Focus is external, on the customer and the community Creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit Accountability, with measured outcomes and impacts Strong stewardship of entrusted resources

Join us on September 14 from 10 AM to 3 PM for the official reopening of the restored Log Kitchen! The event features a live cooking demonstration and book talk by renowned culinary historian Michael Twitty, as well as food samples following historic recipes using modern techniques, prepared by culinary students from Johnson & Wales University, and barbeque from Bobbee O's BBQ. Come and explore the newly renovated kitchen while enjoying a day filled with rich culinary history and delicious flavors. Museum members get exclusive meet and greet time with Mr. Twitty and can enter the building before the general public! Carolina's Home Cooking is sponsored by Culture Blocks - a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. This project has been funded in part by a grant from the National Trust Preservation Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A special thanks to The Mecklenburg Chapter, NSDAR for the funds to restore the Log Kitchen!

We are so excited about this opportunity! We owe our very existence to the preservation of this homesite, and it is an honor to make sure it stands strong for generations to come. Thank you to the National Park Service, the NSDAR, and the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation for your support of our efforts! And kudos to Lauren Wallace, our Development Director, for your hard work on getting this grant application completed!
The Charlotte Museum of History has been awarded a $444,500 National Park Service grant to restore the oldest surviving home in Mecklenburg County, the 1774 Rock House (also called the Hezekiah Alexander House). The house's last major renovation was almost 50 years ago. “We are thrilled to have been selected for this grant and are excited to have resources available to do the work necessary to preserve this home for generations to come," said museum CEO Terri L. White, in a news release. "Although we have expanded the stories we share with our programming and exhibits, we have always recognized that this house and all the histories connected to it are at the heart of our existence and mission."

Thank you Gwendolyn Glenn and WFAE for highlighting Charlotte Museum of History and our decades long fight for equitable funding. We don't want our peer museums to receive less-- but it's past time for us to receive more. #museumsmatter #historicpreservation #fundmuseums
