US prisons are uniquely closed systems and often lack the data or research capacity required for much-needed evidence-based improvement. Join Urban at our headquarters in Washington, DC on 3/20 and 3/21 for a two-day conversation on correctional #policy and research. This symposium will bring together researchers, advocates, and correctional practitioners for an important discussion on research and data in the #prison environment and how lessons learned can inform the future of corrections policy. Willette Benford is a true force, influencing the change we all hope to see within the criminal justice system. She recently spoke with CBS News about her role as senior advisor to the First Lady of Illinois, M.K. Pritzker. Together, they are focused on addressing barriers women face when returning home after incarceration. We are grateful for Willette, both as a member of Chicago Beyond’s National Advisory Council for our Holistic Safety Framework, and for her fierce advocacy for others. https://lnkd.in/eVke84FE

Thomas Schoolcraft has been a close collaborator on the development of Chicago Beyond’s Holistic Safety Framework, which provides a model for increasing physical and psychological safety in corrections. In a recent piece in Corrections1, Thomas shares his perspective on how breaking down the “us vs. them” mentality can improve prison safety, reduce staff burnout, and foster rehabilitation. https://lnkd.in/gvGRWTXj

BREAKING NEWS 🚨Terence Richardson Is Free! After 20+ years of wrongful incarceration, my client Terence walked out of prison this morning at 8 AM, finally reunited with his family, friends and supporters. Today is a victory, but the fight isn’t over. He is not yet fully exonerated. And soon, Ferrone Claiborne will join him in freedom. We celebrate this moment, justice won’t be complete until both men are fully exonerated. Today was a great day! Read more details in the link: https://lnkd.in/gPAZ6pbX
