I am so energized by my time in Tokyo last week where our Social & Community Impact team hosted “Coach the Dream: Changing Sport for Girls” in partnership with Laureus Sport for Good. The summit brought together coaches, community partners, local and global media, and leaders from organizations across Asia to help shift the social and cultural mindset around the critical role that sport plays in a girl’s emotional and physical development and mental health. Participants engaged in panel conversations and coach trainings led by the Center for Healing and Justice through Sport, designed to break down barriers for girls. We also celebrated the fifth anniversary of Play Academy with Naomi Osaka by welcoming 70 girls and their parents to a sport session with tennis icon Naomi Osaka and Laureus Academy Member and five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Missy Franklin Johnson. And, we unveiled the “Japanese Coaching Guide for Girls,” a research-backed guidebook specifically for coaches in Japan that’s supported by the Yomiuri Giants, Japan Basketball Association and other local sports organizations and institutes. Nike’s relationship with Japan spans more than 50 years and we’re excited to continue powering the future of youth sport there — one that’s more inclusive, equitable and fun, especially for girls. Last weekend was awesome. We are so proud to work with Nike and LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games on this incredible initiative. We had an incredible time with the 350 coaches we helped train! #nothinghealslikesport #worldmentalhealthday

While we know that sport is inherently healing, the system has been benching a key player. This initiative is California’s way of saying, “Hey Coach! We see you shaping lives. Let’s recognize your power and level up your game.” We’re excited to team up with the Governor’s office, Positive Coaching Alliance, Susan Crown Exchange and American Institutes for Research to train 25,000 coaches and show the nation that in youth development, everyone wins when coaches are at the top of their game, especially with the full support of the system behind them.

Coaches are more than just strategists; they are role models who inspire character and leadership in young athletes. Back to School: A Critical Time for Teen Mental Health As the new school year begins, it brings a mix of excitement and challenges for young people across the U.S. While the anticipation of new opportunities is palpable, so too is the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty that comes with it. For marginalized groups including BIPOC, LGBTQ+ teens, and girls—these feelings can be particularly intense. The questions "Will I be accepted?" "How will I fit in?" "Am I different?" are more than just passing thoughts; they reflect deep rooted concerns about belonging and acceptance. At Head In The Game, we're committed to supporting the mental wellbeing of teens during this pivotal time. Through our ongoing Back To School campaign, we address the unique challenges faced by marginalized youth, providing them and their trusted adults with resources that are not only practical but also empowering. Our approach is collaborative and expert-driven. Throughout our campaign, we have been privileged to partner with the Center for Healing and Justice through Sport in co-creating a series of engaging video resources that reframe stress as a ‘positive’ experience that aids and supports the personal growth of teens. These insights delivered by their inspiring coaches and student athletes speak to the stresses that young people face in an authentic and credible way. With actionable insights for both teens and the trusted adults who support them, these help to build resilience and confidence as they navigate the school year.
