It’s time for lawmakers to expand Medicare coverage to include anti-obesity medications. Read more from our Clergy Council Co-Chair, Rev. Al Sharpton: https://lnkd.in/ddmiPue9
About us
Choose Healthy Life (CHL) is a non-profit organization focused on providing the Black church – the oldest and most trusted institution in the Black community - with the necessary resources, training, and support to address health disparities in hard-to-reach communities through the delivery of health services and community wellness programs. Our proven, sustainable, and scalable model that brings together faith and science is based on the establishment of a trained faith-based health navigator in each CHL church. We're at the forefront of shaping the health equity field to address social determinants of health, as well as a leader on the ground in providing healthcare services and hands-on action with vulnerable communities. We aren't just discussing the path towards health equity - we're paving it. Founded in 2021 during the height of the COVID pandemic, Choose Healthy Life funded 120 churches across 13 states that conducted over 3,700 events and vaccinated and tested over 110,000 individuals in just 18 months. Today, CHL's health navigators are focused on addressing the underlying health inequities in their respective communities.

We are deeply thankful to Vice President Kamala Harris for her support of the Black church and Choose Healthy Life’s work in addressing the health disparities that have been seriously impacting our communities. In 2021, Vice President Harris attended a Choose Healthy Life event at Ebenezer Baptist Church, which underscores her commitment and partnership with the Black church. (https://lnkd.in/g4n4UC65) “As the Founder of Choose Healthy Life, a faith-based initiative delivering health services through the Black church, and as someone who has been on the front lines for decades fighting to address the health challenges facing our community - I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for actively supporting our work,” said Debra Fraser-Howze who served both President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Thank you, Vice President Harris, for being a beacon of hope and a true partner in our collective journey for health equity in the Black community. #ChooseHealthyLife

We’re still absolutely beaming from our reception on Capitol Hill this week, titled “Addressing Health Equity: We are NOT Going Back to Normal!” during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference. The event convened Congressional leaders, faith leaders, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community-based organizations, and valued corporate partners to tackle health disparities, celebrate achievements, and spotlight ongoing efforts. On behalf of CHL Founder and Board Chair Debra Fraser-Howze, CHL Executive Director Rev. Kimberly L. Williams, and CHL Clergy Council Co-Chair Rev. Al Sharpton, we can’t thank enough the incredible leaders and partners that were a part of it. Our speakers shed light on important legislation that can improve health outcomes in our communities, such as the Health Equity Innovation Act of 2024, the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, and reforms for the 340b Drug Pricing Program. Thank you to our Congressional speakers: Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn, and CHL’s very own Sen. Raphael Warnock for your commitment and leadership. Thank you to Ruth Clements and Quest Diagnostics, David Etzwiler and Siemens Foundation, Damon Davis and Novo Nordisk, and all of our corporate partners for your amazing support and your commitment to our communities. Thank you to our Board members, Clergy Council, and Medical Advisory Board for your steadfast leadership. And of course, thank you to the coalition of health equity and community-based organizations in attendance for the work you do. We’re excited to continue working together to address health disparities and fight for legislation that helps our communities. We had an exciting day as CHL's Executive Director, Rev. Kimberly L. Williams spoke on a panel at the 2024 National Medical Association (NMA) Convention titled “Do I Need This Shot?: Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy” The focus of the panel was not just addressing vaccine hesitancy, but “encouraging vaccine confidence,” as articulated by fellow panelesit Dr. Zanthia Wiley from Emory Department of Medicine. The panel featured several incredible leaders in Black Public Health, pictured and captioned above. Rev. Williams highlighted CHL’s proven and effective model in encouraging vaccine confidence in underserved Black communities, partnering with the Black church to provide vaccinations for COVID-19, RSV, and the Flu, in addition to our other health and wellness services. CHL has vaccinated, tested, and distributed kits to over 300,000 individuals for COVID-19, and we’re committed to creating vaccine confidence in our communities. This panel was an incredible opportunity to discuss best practices and forge the path forward as we tackle health disparities. Thank you to the NMA for hosting this important conversation and providing a platform for sharing our mission and successes For more information on CHL, please visit our website at www.choosehealthylife.org
