A new study published in #MedicalCare , led by Karen Lasater, provides evidence on the risks associated with reducing the proportion of RNs delivering patient care in hospital settings. Key findings include higher patient mortality, increased readmissions, and negative financial consequences for hospitals. Good to have Australian study looking at Surprise Question and Indicator for a palliative approach at the utility of screening for end of life in a tertiary hospital. A simple and seemingly effective way to help identify and respond to needs for care at the end of life in the acute setting. Thanks to the authors.
"Screening for End-of-Life in Acute Hospitals: A Cross-Sectional Survey" by Dr Timothy To, Paul Hakendorf and Professor David Currow has been published in the American Journal of Hospice & Palliative Care. More here: https://lnkd.in/gvYkhckg "Patients are frequently admitted to hospital in the last year of life. Actively recognising patients at this stage gives the opportunity to plan future care... We performed a cross-sectional survey of all acute medical and surgical inpatients at one tertiary hospital. Two simple screening tools, the 'indicators for a palliative approach' and the 'surprise question' identified a group of patients at greatly increased risk of dying over the next year." #EndofLife #AcuteCare #LastYearofLife

The Surgical Wound Complications recommendations are designed to provide clear advice to health and care practitioners, service managers and commissioners about the fundamentals of evidence-informed care for people with surgical wound complications. They are intended for use in all clinical care settings and aim to support implementation of evidence-based clinical practice in the treatment of surgical wounds. It has been estimated that approximately a fifth of surgical wounds fail to heal within 12 months, leading to considerable patient suffering and NHS cost. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT SIGNS OF HEART DISEASE AND CARDIAC ARREST This month has several important things happening that we, as nurses and an organization, can help with. The one I will focus on this year is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. We know that men are at a higher risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks. We also know that men are traditionally very bad when it comes to seeking out preventative care, as well as emergency care. As nurses, we really need to help in educating the public, especially men in our communities, about the risk factors, signs and symptoms of a heart attack or coronary artery disease to help prevent cardiac arrest. We know that percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the gold standard in treatment. We also know that the faster a person has an intervention, the better the prognosis. Now, we need the public to understand the signs and symptoms so that they seek treatment early. This year's AAMN Conference will be held Oct. 17-19 in St. Louis. Registration for the conference is still open. There will be several things happening at the conference you won’t want to miss, including an opportunity to help move the organization forward through bylaws revisions. These bylaws will help shape the future direction of the organization as well as modernize the organization to better align to what is happening within other organizations. There will be an online broadcast of the annual business meeting and bylaws vote at 5 pm Eastern on Oct. 18. We need your voice to be heard so that we can meet the needs of all our members while moving the mission of the organization forward. Please make plans to attend, either in person or virtually. Plans are already moving forward for next year. We have the location secured, which will be announced at the conference, along with the conference theme. Next year marks the 50th annual conference, so please begin making plans to attend. I have every confidence it will be a great conference based on the work of our outstanding Conference Planning Committee. #HeartHealth #NursingLeadership #AAMN #HealthcareAdvocacy #CardiacArrestAwareness #NursingCommunity, Jason Mott PhD, RN, Aaron D. 4moBravo Karen Lasater this is the right research for the right time - no matter that we’ve brought more technology into healthcare the past decade then ever before in history - the one fact that remains is that patient outcomes depend on the direct care of a nurse. Nurse to patient ratios are still the number one factor to determine outcomes. Now we must figure out the financial model that removes nurses from being a cost to healthcare systems and adopt a financial model to support nurses at the bedside. I will start using this study in all my public speeches on the state of the nursing workforce. #NursesOnLinkedIn #HealthcareOnLinkedIn Commission for Nurse Reimbursement
