We need to urgently unite and reconnect for nature and take action to become CitiesWithNature and RegionsWithNature!
About us
CitiesWithNature is a unique initiative that recognizes and enhances the value of nature in and around cities across the world. It provides a shared platform for cities and their partners to engage and take action, under a shared commitment towards a more sustainable urban world. Nature provides diverse life-supporting and life-enhancing contributions to people in cities and towns and all cities critically depend on healthy interconnected ecosystems within and around them. Based on this critical service, it is essential to fully integrate nature into urban planning and development. As a result, there is a growing urgency for collective and large-scale action to protect the biodiversity in and around cities to prevent irreversible loss and damage to the natural systems we depend on. This is the aim of CitiesWithNature, and its founding partners ICLEI (iclei.org) The Nature Conservancy (TNC) (nature.org/en-us) and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (iucn.org) along with the support of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (cbd.int) and other international partners. Building on the success of CitiesWithNature, RegionsWithNature follows a similar model and will be providing a dynamic online space enabling regional governments and their partners to connect, demonstrate their commitment to biodiversity goals and access resources to enhance their landscape and territorial actions for nature. Regional governments, such as provinces and states, often have different mandates from cities and are best positioned to work at the larger scale of landscapes. This enables regions to implement solutions that uniquely span from urban to rural areas and across local governments. This partnership initiative is being developed by founding partners ICLEI, Regions4 (regions4.org), IUCN, the Group of Leading Subnational Governments toward Aichi Biodiversity Targets (GoLS) (kankyojoho.pref.aichi.jp/gols) and others.

The 2024 Living Planet Report is out, and the message is clear: Nature is in crisis. There has been a 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations since 1970. These declines are an early warning indicator of increasing extinction risk and the potential loss of ecosystem health and resilience. As vital ecosystems near collapse, we are dangerously close to tipping points that could lead to irreversible impacts for both people and the planet. While time is running out, there’s still hope. We have the global agreements and solutions to set nature on the path to recovery by 2030, but current action falls far short of what’s needed. To truly make a difference, we must transform our energy, food, and finance systems, and restore nature in a fair and inclusive way. The stakes are too high to ignore. Explore the 2024 Living Planet Report and discover the steps we need to take—before it’s too late. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eVH-CMtN #LPR2024 #LivingPlanetReport
