    On Tuesday, Brighton City Council recognized the latest group of Brighton Performance & Leadership Academy graduates. Congratulations to Elizabeth Barczak, Margaret DeMarco, Emma Lane, AICP, and Christian Morales! With these latest graduates, Brighton employees have now implemented 49 innovation projects for a total of $1.1 million in projected annual savings. Brighton's Leadership and Performance Academy is an award-winning five-week program that teaches participants LEAN skills for identifying, analyzing, and solving pain points in their day-to-day work. It also empowers participants to lead from any seat, build winning teams, and deliver exceptional customer service both internal and external. Beginning last year, the Academy also began accepting candidates from other government entities and nonprofits.     The City of Brighton and two city employees have been recognized with awards from the Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association. Brighton received the 2024 sustainability award in the medium community division for the city's Streetlight LED Conversion Project, while Joseph León, infrastructure & development construction manager, was awarded 2024 Professional Manager of the Year – Administrative Management, and Joe Huerta, traffic signal supervisor, was named 2024 Outstanding Public Works Employee. The City of Brighton’s ambitious Streetlight LED Conversion Project is a collaborative effort between the sustainability and public works departments, in partnership with United Power, Inc.     This summer, Metropolitan State University student Jared Jurado had the opportunity to intern with our Utilities Department, focusing on engineering. Reflecting on his experience, Jared shared, "This summer has been both rewarding and fulfilling, and I’m truly grateful for the chance to learn and grow with the engineering team." Before concluding his internship, Jared presented what he learned during his time with us. Check out the video below to hear more about his experience. This summer, 14 interns dedicated 150 hours to their respective departments, gaining valuable insights into the workings of municipal government.     This week, Brighton City Council proclaimed July as Park and Recreation Month and recognized the integral role parks and recreation play in Brighton and throughout the community. Check out the Brighton Recreation Center Facebook page to see all the events planned to celebrate the month. Additionally, City Council designated July 19 as Park and Recreation Professionals Day, recognizing that the parks and recreation field is a diverse and comprehensive system that improves personal, social, environmental, and economic health. Thank you to all of our dedicated Parks and Recreation Department staff who work each day to provide recreational and developmental enrichment for children, youth, and adults, and to ensure our parks and recreational spaces are clean, safe, inclusive, welcoming, and ready to use.
