City staff work day in and day out to keep the Greeley community a clean, safe and beautiful place to live, work and play. Our staff from departments across the organization volunteered to meet up in central Greeley this morning. Our dedicated city leaders served up lunch to over 600 employees at Island Grove Regional Park at the City of Greeley Employee BBQ on August 21! The event was a huge success, filled with delicious food, engaging activities and valuable resources. The City of Greeley and Reynolds Construction recently completed Phase 1 of the Terry Ranch Pipeline Project when it laid the final sections of the initial 7.7 miles of pipeline into place north of Windsor. Greeley and Reynolds project staff celebrated the milestone by signing a section of the pipeline before lowering it into the ground and welding it into place. The Terry Ranch Aquifer, an underground pocket of water, contains nearly 2 million acre-feet of drought-resilient groundwater. The city plans to recharge and store water in the aquifer during wet years and withdraw and treat it for municipal uses during extended droughts. The 30-mile pipeline is being built in phases over time to keep Greeley’s water rates low. Once completed, it will connect Greeley’s existing treated water pipeline infrastructure to the Terry Ranch water treatment plant and underground aquifer. Jim Paulson, a civil engineer with Greeley’s Water and Sewer Department, credits the construction and engineering teams with keeping Phase 1 on schedule and under budget. "I’m excited that we’ve completed the first seven miles of new 36-inch welded steel pipeline that will serve the community for generations to come,” Paulson said. Natural disasters such as wildfires, floods and even forced shutdowns of electrical grids can devastate a water utility unless staff act quickly. Cole Gustafson, Source Water Supply Manager with Greeley’s Water & Sewer Department, spoke at the 2024 Confluence Colorado Water Summit in Boulder on August 1. His insight into wildfires' impact on a water utility is another example of how Greeley staff actively engage with other water industry professionals to offer support and exchange ideas. The 2020 Cameron Peak Fire remains the largest wildfire in Colorado history, burning over 208,000 acres across the Poudre River and Big Thompson River Watersheds. Greeley and its partners took what they learned from that disaster to develop new partnerships and policies and improve fire mitigation practices that protect the region's source water.

Our Natural Areas and Trails team recently released some Leafy Spurge Flea Beetles, or Aphthona nigriscutis! Leafy Spurge is a noxious weed. It is poisonous to animals and causes irritation for humans. To help manage this weed, we released 1,000 Leafy Spurge Flea Beetles. The beetle larvae and adults feed on the plant, causing a decrease in the plant population. These beetles are a biological control, which is one aspect of our Integrated Pest Management plan (IPM). IPM also includes chemical application, mechanical removal, and cultural methods. On July 25th, we celebrated a remarkable milestone at the 11th Annual Naturalization Ceremony. 28 individuals from 17 different countries took their oath and officially became U.S. citizens! This year's ceremony was graced by inspiring words from City leaders including Assistant City Manager Juliana Kitten, City Councilwoman Deb DeBoutez, and State Representative Mary Young. Their speeches reflected the shared values of unity and inclusion that make our community so vibrant. A huge congratulations to our new citizens!
