On the second Saturday in September, over 140 participated in a watershed cleanup spanning from Cannon Falls to Waterville, targeting more than 20 shoreline miles along the Cannon and Straight Rivers. The event marked the 16th year of our Cannon River Watershed-Wide Cleanup, encompassing various sites within the nearly million-acre watershed. The cleanup was part of Clean River Partners’ new Volunteer Corps program, which provides eager volunteers with a wide range of opportunities to improve water quality and biodiversity in their local environment through restoration and conservation efforts, education events, and more. This program is made possible thanks to funding from Northfield Shares, Xcel Energy Foundation, Henkel Foundation, and the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation. We partnered with the City of Northfield and HealthFinders Collaborative to organize a special event called "Nuestra Agua, Nuestras Vidas" (Our Water, Our Lives) at Bridge Square. The event aimed to connect with the local Latine community, raise awareness about water-related issues, and empower residents to advocate for improvements in drinking water and local water bodies.

🌾 The praries in Minnesota are a cherished part of our landscape, yet only 1% of native prairie remains. With the support of our partners Clean River Partners Great River Greening and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, we are working together to reverse habitat loss, improve water quality, and expand public access to the outdoors. Recently, I had the honor of witnessing our mission in action during a land dedication event in Morristown, MN, where Ms. Judy and her family partnered with us to protect and restore their cherished farmland. We are deeply grateful to Judy and her family for their foresight in ensuring that this land will be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come. #Conservation #PrairieRestoration #OutdoorAccess #HabitatRestoration

The Soil Health Bust Tour was such a great way to wrap up the month of July. We're grateful for everyone who participated!
Deborah Carter McCoy and Emily (Franklin) Haley headed to Northfield, Minnesota, this week to participate in Clean River Partners’ soil health bus tour. We visited three farms in the region to see on-farm conservation in action alongside farmers, state and local agency staff, and other nonprofits working in the conservation agriculture space. Twin Oaks Farm – cover crops, no till, strip till, nutrient management, grassed waterways. Honken Farms – cover crops, prescribed grazing, no till, perennial plantings (Kernza) + a flower CSA. TJ Kartes Farm – cover crops and no till on land formerly used for sand and gravel mining. TJ is using cover crops like flax, clover, and kale to rebuild the soil structure. Themes of the day were exploring on-farm and in-field data and tackling practice change with a spirit of discovery. Kudos to Jennifer Tonko, Al Kraus, and the Clean River Partners staff for organizing such a fabulous day of learning and networking. We've been working diligently with Trust for Public Land and Great River Greening to enhance access to public land in the Cannon River Watershed. Join us this summer for two land dedication events. These events will provide an opportunity to learn more about our collaborative habitat protection and restoration efforts and to recognize the landowners for their contributions to land ethic and habitat. Funding for these events and the land acquisitions was provided from the Outdoor Heritage Fund, as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature. The first event will take place on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Sakatah WMA, where Judith Altobell and her family will share their story and vision for their property in Rice County. The second event will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Faribault WMA - Medford Unit, where Don Redman will share his journey of realizing the natural legacy on his property. The goats were a fan favorite at this event!
On June 5, volunteers from Mend Collaborative assisted in spreading native seed throughout 4 acres of oak woodlands at Sunktokeca Wildlife Management Area. They were joined by our on site workers, goats! The goats are grazing non-native saplings on the acreage. This seeding is an important way to create a more balanced, diverse understory on the landscape to support more wildlife. 🐐🌱 Thank you to our partners and funders: Minnesota Land Trust Clean River Partners Minnesota DNR Outdoor Heritage Fund (OHF), as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature and recommended by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHC) Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) 📸: Lawrence Cosslett
