Read the op-ed in Economist Impact co-authored by H.E. Razan Al Mubarak and Johan #Rockström on why nature remains our greatest ally in achieving net-zero. In 2023, the cost of climate change was devastating. 12,000 people lost their lives, inflicting over $200 billion in damages. At #COP28, nature was given greater prominence, with almost every country calling for an end to deforestation. As officials continue discussions in #COP16Colombia, the COP to COP road needs to ensure sufficient levels of public and private finance to keep the remaining nature on Earth intact. By 2030, nature could provide a third of cost-effective decarbonisation, generate 395 million jobs and create annual business opportunities worth some $10 trillion, if action is taken now. The road from COP16 Colombia in Cali to #COP30 in Belem demands strong unity to put nature at the heart of our decisions. We are at a pivotal moment for integrated environmental action. At COP28 UAE we elevated the importance of nature to secure a sustainable future. Non-State actors are key to helping countries strengthen national climate and nature plans, scale up investment for nature and food system transformation and support the full and effective participation of farmers, Indigenous Peoples and local communities across climate, food systems and nature policy development. Together we can make the #ParisAgreement and the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework a reality.                                                                     #UAEConsensus

Latest from #COP16Colombia. H.E. Razan Al Mubarak engaged with high-level leaders in Cali on Wednesday in support of the six-year race to restoration and to take forward the momentum built at #COP28 to put nature at the heart of actions for our future. The Restoration Day event was attended by ministers of Brazil, Colombia, Germany, representatives of UN Environment Programme, FAO, CBD and UNCCD Secretariat, and leading voices from Indigenous Peoples, academia and the private sector, highlighting that progress is urgently needed to achieve restoration targets. By 2030, 350 million hectares of degraded land need to be restored to safeguard the livelihoods of millions of people and potentially yield up to $9 trillion in ecosystem services to restore hope for a sustainable future. The restoration of 12 million hectares of native vegetation in this decade in Brazil through the national “Planaveg” was announced by the national government. Representatives of the African continent also announced initiatives to scale up restoration initiatives in the continent. Ministers and non-State actors leaders gathered at the “Thematic Ministerial Dialogue: Biodiversity and Climate Change” to discuss how to move from science to action. The event also marked the #COP16 Presidency’s contribution to the #Rio synergies agenda under the #RioTrio initiative and highlighted the legacy of #COP28 to strengthen the nature and climate agenda to achieve the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework and the #ParisAgreement.
