18 startups turning waste heat into power 🏭 ⚡️ 💡 What: Data centres are producing incredible amounts of heat. Instead of letting it escape into the atmosphere, furthering warming and wasting energy, startups are looking at ways to repurpose this heat in valuable ways. 🤔 Why: Data centre power consumption is expected to double by 2030 in the US alone. And supporting this adoption will require more power and cooling than what most existing inventory can provide. 🧮 In Numbers: Currently, data centres account for up to 1.5% of global electricity consumption. But some forecasts predict that by 2030, they could use up to 21% of the world's electricity supply. Powering energy grid opportunities ⚡️ Earlier this month we met in Tel Aviv to uncover the public and private sector challenges and opportunities in electricity and grid technologies. It’s need to be said - finding a true value (and not something that is nice to have) for potential customers is difficult.
 Why would a conservative industry like the electrical grid would take the chance on your solution? Founding a grid technology startup in Israel isn’t so bad, although it’s not your target market. ClimateHack NYC goes for a run 🏃🏃🏻♀️ Second time lucky, a week later and the sun was shining for the inaugural ClimateHack Run and Walk in New York City. Stepping away from laptops, swapping lab coats for running kit and loafers for sneakers we headed out to enjoy a sunny morning run together followed by coffee and networking. Harnessing waste heat from data centres 🏭 Do you ever wonder about the energy that powers your mid-afternoon social media scroll? Each action you take online generates data. And something has to process it. That something is a data centre. Data centres are notoriously energy-hungry. And thanks to the world’s hyper-focus on AI, data centre power requirements are set to skyrocket. As data centres gobble up all this energy, they produce excess, or waste heat. This leads to even higher energy needs – data centres require cooling systems to keep them operational. If we instead harnessed and redirected this excess heat for use in, say, heating buildings or powering industrial processes, we could drastically improve energy efficiency while also mitigating carbon emissions. But today, most of this heat is released, unused, into the environment. 25 Biomining startups to know 🪨 ⛏️ Biomining in its basic form is nothing new. Mining companies, for example, have used the bacillus bacteria to extract residual copper from ore for decades. But biotech innovations are making biomining greener and smarter. In fact there are new methods that extract metal without even needing rock. 📊 The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that by 2040 we will need between 6x and 19x more nickel than in 2020, as well as 6x-21x more cobalt and 13x-42x more lithium. 💡 How does it work: Bioleaching    IMicrobes aid the work of rock crushers (and replace some of the work of smelters) by seeking out metals and flushing them from the rock. This happens through oxidation: the microbes oxidise the metal and allow it to be dissolved in water. Once the metallic water is collected, the metals within it can be reconstituted. E-waste biomining   Electronic waste dumps — computers, phones, electrical cables — have nickel, copper, gold, lithium and other metals in higher concentrations than many ore-bearing rocks. Mining e-waste landfills for metal is a circular economy dream, especially when it is done through the low-carbon process of bioleaching. Phytomining  This process employs bioleaching but with a feedstock very different from rocks. Plants are the “miners,” and their mines are nickel-rich soil. During photosynthesis certain plants absorb trace nickel from the soil in their roots and leaves. A plantation of such plants is then harvested, bioleached, and turned into metal. Remediation  Biomining can also clean up contaminated land. Mining companies, for example, use microbes to leach their tailings. Is Biomining the Future of Mining? ⛏️ One irony of the “green” transition is the pressure it puts on mining: we need more metal to electrify everything and reach net zero emissions by 2050. It’s a sustainability dilemma. How can we create a decarbonised, environmentally responsible future that requires ripping up the earth for new metal? To make things harder: most of the “easy” metals deposits have been found and mined. That includes exceptionally big deposits, and/or high-grade deposits where much of the rock is the metal that needs extracting, and/or deposits placed near roads, rails, and ports. Many of today’s new sources of critical metals are lower-grade, limited in volume, and/or in a harsh, inaccessible environment. Mining is getting harder, more expensive, and in many cases dirtier at a time when demand for green metals is hockey-sticking up.  🏑 These trends place biomining, or the use of natural microorganisms to extract minerals, in the spotlight.
