Removing a billion tons of CO₂ from the air could be this generation’s equivalent of building a global sewage system—a massive infrastructure project to manage excess carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, much like today’s waste management services. So, how do we go there? Looking at other large-scale infrastructure projects, it’s clear that public-private partnerships are essential. These partnerships mobilize the critical funding, expertise, and risk-sharing needed to succeed in such ambitious ventures. As COP29 in Baku approaches, we’re preparing for the world’s most crucial forum to advance global climate action—including on carbon removal and the role of public-private partnerships in driving it forward. The panel: Catalyzing carbon removal through public-private partnerships Co-hosts: Climeworks and Green by Iceland Where: Denmark Pavilion (Blue Zone) When: November 12th | 10am - 11am (Baku time - GMT+4) Check out our expert speaker line-up! We're delighted to host this discussion at the Denmark Pavilion, a country which has set the ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030. And a huge shoutout to our partners at Green by Iceland, who are organizing this panel with us and working tirelessly to connect innovators, governments, and investors across Iceland and from there across the globe.

With our Direct Air Capture technology, we remove CO₂ from the air to fight global warming.
About us
Climeworks empowers people and companies to fight global warming by offering carbon dioxide removal as a service via Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. At Orca and Mammoth, Climeworks’ DAC facilities in Iceland, the CO₂ is permanently removed from the air by capturing and geologically storing it for thousands of years with Climeworks’ storage partner Carbfix. Climeworks’ DAC facilities run exclusively on low carbon energy, and our modular CO₂ collectors can be stacked to build machines of any capacity. Founded by engineers Christoph Gebald and Jan Wurzbacher in 2009, Climeworks is on a journey to climate impact at scale. To do so, we strive to inspire 1 billion people to act and remove CO₂ from the air.

This week, Climeworks met with community members in Southwest Louisiana at an open house for Project Cypress Southwest, co-hosted by Battelle and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy. Here we had an incredible opportunity to connect directly with the community, to share more details about project plans and progress made so far, and to answer community questions. We’re grateful for the neighbors who attended the event to provide feedback and meet members of the project team, and we’re looking forward to continued conversations with the community in the near future. Special thanks to project partner CapturePoint LLC for joining to provide important information surrounding the transport and storage of the CO2 that will be stored at their CENLA Hub. https://lnkd.in/gtHfi336 To learn more about Project Cypress visit www.projectcypress.com.

Business as a force for good This is the central theme of the UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, which we’re proud to join as a new member of the UN Global Compact Network USA. As Climeworks is on track to establish one of the first megaton-scale Direct Air Capture Hubs in the U.S., we're excited to engage with the UN Global Compact local network, sharing our carbon removal expertise to support net-zero pathways. At Tuesday's Sustainability Leadership reception in San José, Joe Rigodanzo, Benedict von Merey, Savannah Bush, Marco Hartmann, and Chatu Abeysinghe already had the chance to connect with fellow members, starting valuable conversations about innovative climate solutions for a sustainable future. We look forward to continuing the dialogue on high-quality carbon removal! #ClimateAction #CarbonRemoval #NetZero

Carbon capture and storage has been called “bogus”, a “bamboozle”, even a “boondoggle”. And yet, the UK is injecting £22bn into it, Japan wants to commercialise it by 2030, and California’s first project just got the green light. So is this idea to capture and lock CO2 deep underground really a new frontier in the climate fight? Or an excuse to drill more? Jack Board and I break it down in our latest Climate Conversations, with Climeworks CEO Christoph Gebald. 🎧 CNA: https://cna.asia/40sOQJY 🎧 Apple: https://cna.asia/3CfG73D 🎧 Spotify: https://cna.asia/3AaoAcP

We are honored to receive the Masters of Scale Business Award in the category of Mission Critical—a title that couldn’t be more fitting. To succeed in the international community’s mission to keep global warming within limits, carbon removal must scale to billions of tons, and it must happen fast. Awards like this raise essential awareness about our work, and we are very grateful to the Masters of Scale team for this recognition. If you’d like to learn more about our mission, why it’s crucial in the fight against climate change, and how it all relates to mountaineering and setting achievable interim “base camps” on our path to scale, we invite you to check out this conversation between our co-CEO Christoph Gebald and Bob Safian, Editor-at-large of Masters of Scale, from 2023: https://lnkd.in/gH2ZCPY2 #CarbonRemoval #MissionCritical #NetZero

📣 🌏 Climeworks joins the B4NZ Ecosystem! We are thrilled to welcome Climeworks into the B4NZ ecosystem, adding their cutting-edge Direct Air Capture technology and carbon removal expertise to our collective efforts to accelerate the journey to net zero across the UK. At B4NZ, we already work closely with financial institutions and corporates to drive decarbonisation and help meet ambitious climate targets. However, reaching true net zero requires more than just reducing emissions—it also involves removing CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. This is where Climeworks plays a vital role in the puzzle. Barbara Truyers, Global Head of Strategic Partnerships Financial Services at Climeworks, underscores the importance of collaboration in achieving net zero ambitions: "The path to true net zero demands both emission reductions and the active removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, as highlighted by the IPCC. Achieving this ambitious climate target is not something any firm or sector can accomplish in isolation but requires collaboration and partnerships with organisations dedicated to high-impact solutions. That is why Climeworks is proud to join B4NZ, providing high-quality carbon removal expertise that aligns with B4NZ's vision and efforts to guide financial institutions in the UK on their net-zero journey." 💭 Why Climeworks Matters: The UK’s ambitious climate targets—reducing emissions by 68% by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050—can’t be reached through emission cuts alone. Carbon removal, especially through technologies like Direct Air Capture, will be essential. By 2030, the UK plans to remove at least 5 Mt CO2 annually, scaling up to 75-81 Mt CO2 by 2050. However, scaling carbon removal is not just about hitting climate targets - it is also about building a new industry, creating jobs, and establishing supply chains. We’re excited to collaborate with Climeworks and our other partners to push forward towards a net zero future! Last Thursday, we were excited to announce our newest partner: Morgan Stanley H. Claire Brown, Sustainability Reporter at The Wall Street Journal, was interested in knowing more about this partnership and wrote up an exclusive story for the paper. “Climeworks’ rapid scale-up may prove that direct-air capture technologies, long seen as a climate solution for the distant future, can build a market in the near term,” she writes and this is right. Or as our co-CEO, Jan Wurzbacher puts it “We’re in this position where we have to scale markets and technology at the same time in parallel—and be fast, of course, with both,” Check out the full exclusive: https://lnkd.in/efSkakKQ #DirectAirCapture #ClimateAction #CarbonRemoval #NetZero
