About us
We founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice because we believe in a world where human rights are protected and no one is above the law. Justice, like war, must be waged; it doesn’t just happen on its own. So we gather evidence of mass human rights abuses, provide free legal support to victims and work to ensure that perpetrators are held to account. The fight for justice has some difficult foes and we are staring down some alarming global trends. Since it was founded CFJ has grown every year, and now works in more than 40 countries. We are actively investigating war crimes in Ukraine, monitoring sham trials targeting women and journalists and fighting against a global trend of authoritarianism that seeks to punish those who speak truth to power. "We founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice to hold perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable for their crimes, and to help victims in their fight for justice." — Amal and George Clooney

At #TheAlbies we honored Dolores Huerta with the Lifetime Achievement in Pursuit of Justice award for her lifelong advocacy for farm workers, women, and marginalized communities. Jon Stewart, who presented Huerta with her award, said that “for well over half a century, Dolores Huerta has embodied the pursuit of social justice in this country.”

Despite being detained and tortured in #Venezuela, Luis Carlos Díaz continues to expose abuses of power and fight for freedom of expression. The Clooney Foundation for Justice was honored to recognize him with the Justice for Journalists award at #TheAlbies last week. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who presented Luis Carlos with his award, said that “his story reminds us that when a journalist is suppressed, it is not just one person who is targeted, it is the people's right to know the truth itself."

At #TheAlbies this year, Nadia Murad received our Justice for Defenders of the Rule of Law award in recognition of her dedication to advocating for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. Nadia received her award from Cate Blanchett who said that Nadia’s story is “a rebuke to those who tried to destroy her people, it's a challenge to those who are complacent in the face of injustice, and a source of inspiration for women and men around the world.”

Last week at #TheAlbies, Malawian gender activist Memory Banda received our Justice for Women award for her relentless work to end child marriage and her advocacy for girls’ rights to education and empowerment. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, who presented Memory with her award, said that "Memory's story shows us that, when girls speak out, they can change the world, not only for themselves, but for others.”

Last week at #TheAlbies ✨ This event is so meaningful because it shines a much-needed spotlight on courageous individuals who are fighting to advance justice and freedom all over the world—often at great personal sacrifice. One of the awardees was Memory Banda, a Malawian children’s rights activist that Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney, and I met last year when we were in Malawi to learn more about efforts to end child marriage and gender-based violence. I’m thrilled she was recognized for her work alongside so many other changemakers. And of course, I loved getting to see Michelle and Amal. Thank you to the Clooney Foundation for Justice for hosting!

"Violence against women is a crime that undermines the dignity and rights of all people. Rape is not an inevitable consequence of war. It is a deliberate weapon. It is a powerful weapon because it lasts forever. It lives in your soul, your bones, and your mind. But there, it can transform into far more powerful weapons: truth, hope, and compassion. These weapons of the spirit can and must be wielded to fight for justice." - #NadiaMurad while accepting an honor at the #AlbieAwards hosted by Clooney Foundation for Justice

#TrialWatch has reviewed 36 criminal defamation cases in #Thailand since the country adopted two anti-SLAPP provisions in 2019. The findings, detailed in a report released today, underline the urgent need for more robust protections. Although Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (#SLAPPs) are used worldwide to silence critical voices, they are notoriously ubiquitous in #Thailand. The 2019 anti-SLAPP rules have not proved sufficient to eliminate abusive cases that drag on for years. As Thailand’s Ministry of Justice considers new anti-SLAPP measures, we urge #Thailand to strengthen these protections, close legal loopholes, and implement meaningful deterrents against baseless litigation.
