Today's member spotlight is award-winning broadcast journalist Andrew Donovan! As the senior reporter for NewsChannel 9 WSYR, Andrew Donovan has been on the front lines of the biggest news events in Central New York for more than the last decade. Just in 2024, Donovan led the station's reporting of President Joe Biden's visit to Syracuse, the death and funerals of two police officers, and an EF-2 tornado hitting Rome. He is the only local journalist to report from the Kennedy Space Center as Syracuse native Jeanette Epps launched into space. Donovan is also the only local journalist to travel Micron Technology's headquarters in Boise, Idaho, as the company embarks on a promised $100 million commitment to building a CHIPS Act-funded megafab in Onondaga County. Donovan is most recognized for his coverage of the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic, including his fixed front row seat at the Onondaga County Executive's daily televised press briefings. He won the only "Covering COVID" award ever presented by the Syracuse Press Club. In 2021, he won a New York Emmy as part of the team to produce "Veterans Voices," which included his reporting embedded with local veterans onboard Honor Flight Mission #15. The Utica native, who started in journalism at his hometown station WKTV at age 16, joined the #1-rated ABC affiliate in July 2013. In 2021, his duties were expanded to including hosting the weekly public affairs broadcast, “Newsmakers with Andrew Donovan.” Donovan leads the station's reporting of local elections and politics, including moderating high-stakes debates for congress. Andrew's service to his community extends beyond work hours. He served as an honorary chairperson of Vera House's White Ribbon Campaign, sits on the local Nexstar Founder's Day of Caring committee to plan the station's annual community philanthropic efforts and is the historian for the Hobart College Alumni Association. Andrew volunteers for his Alma mater, Hobart and William Smith Colleges. On the less serious side of the job, Andrew is a fixture at the New York State Fair and Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade. He not only recognizes them as occasions to celebrate with the community, but to bond with his hard-working work family. What do Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather and rapper Flo Rida have in common? They've been interviewed by Andrew Donovan! Outside of work, Andrew loves life around Downtown Syracuse and enjoys the local foodie scene and downtown festival circuit. Join us in congratulating Andrew on today's member spotlight and thank him for reporting important local stories!
