The Coalition for Clean Air works to protect public health, improve air quality, and prevent climate change.
About us
Follow the Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) to join our community of professionals, policy-makers and everyday people dedicated to bringing clean air to California. Established in 1971, CCA is California's only statewide public interest organization advocating exclusively for improving air quality and preventing climate change. From creating the idea for California’s original Smog Check program in 1981 to ensuring the first national ban on the toxic dry cleaning chemical “perc” to helping pass legislation to put 1 million electric vehicles on California’s roads by 2023, CCA leads the way to socially and environmentally responsible air policies nationally and worldwide. Today our small but might staff engages in educational programming, informing policy and coordinating the largest air quality campaign in the State: California Clean Air Day. Why We Exist In California, nine out of ten people breathe air that violates federal clean air standards. This creates far higher rates of asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk. Early exposure to air pollution leads to a lifetime of weakened lungs. Thousands of people die of lung cancer every year who have never smoked a day in their life. Climate change is expected to exacerbate the situation, increasing the intensity and number of days we are exposed to this toxic soup of air pollution. The good news is that there is a path forward. Through good policies, the adoption of new technologies and the involvement of people like you, we can restore clean, healthy air to California.

A new study reveals a troubling spike in nitrogen dioxide pollution near e-commerce hubs, highlighting the health risks for communities around massive warehouses. As these facilities grow, so does the heavy-duty traffic and pollution they bring, disproportionately affecting minority populations. We're grateful to Rep. Nanette Barragán for her strong support of the Rail Yards Indirect Source Rule (ISR). Her letter highlights the urgent need to reduce pollution from freight rail yards in the South Coast Air Basin, which will help prevent 275 premature deaths and over 1,940 emergency room visits annually. Passing this ISR is vital for the health and well-being of communities like Wilmington and Long Beach, which are heavily impacted by rail pollution. Thank you, Rep. Barragán, for championing cleaner air! 🌿 Read her full letter here: https://lnkd.in/giCXWRc3 #CleanAir #HealthierCommunities #ISRVote

We at Coltura are excited to be working with Coalition for Clean Air, The Greenlining Institute, Union of Concerned Scientists, Valley CAN and many other organizations to steer EV incentives to the most gasoline-burdened California households. In doing so, we can accelerate emission cuts, maximize $ saved, AND advance the equitable deployment of #electricvehicles. Check out this piece by Roman Partida-Lopez and my colleague, Janelle London. https://lnkd.in/enH8W8pX

This morning Senator Delgado, California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph, South Coast Air Quality Management District Chair Vanessa Delgado, and Joseph Goffman, Deputy Assistant Administrator for US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made a joint announcement that Southern California received 1 of the 25 national Climate Pollution Across America grants to reduce pollution in the South Coast Air Basin, the most polluted basin in the country. With 40% of US imports coming through the ports and the transportation sector responsible for 80% of air pollution in our region, the almost $500 million grant to the South Coast Air Basin will help us reduce air pollution from these impactful sources! Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRvNqTv9 Additionally, we’re glad to see these agencies recommitting to important safeguards like rail and port ISRs, strengthening standards for locomotive emissions, and zero-emission trucks through letters of intent, but all 3 agencies need to do more to protect our health, because these letters are not binding and do not guarantee attaining healthy air that fulfills the Clean Air Act.
