🧐 What is digital security and why does it matter? 🧐 The concept can sound a little vague - but digital security is about data, how we intend to use it as a society, and how we secure it (ie more than cybersecurity but not excluding it). That's why it's important to talk about it in an interdisciplinary way that invites more stakeholders to the table, not fewer. Some of our faculty thinking and writing about these concepts are Eric Burger, Nataliya D. Brantly, PhD, Aaron Brantly, Shalini Misra, Patrick R., Sezaneh Seymour, and Mark Tirpak. It's also why we partner with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) to help disseminate these concepts.

Are you a Virginia resident interested in cybersecurity but lacking the background knowledge to enter the industry? Consider applying to the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative's Cybersecurity Traineeship! This program consists of two primary components. Participants first receive instruction over the course of a 7-week, online bootcamp experience. Students who successfully complete this aspect of the program then have the potential to participate in paid on-the-job training with a regional employer for an additional 12 weeks. Virginia CyberSlam 2025 is in the books! What an event it was March 10, with 475 students representing 22 schools and six school districts from around the Commonwealth enjoying hands-on workshops and activities led by cyber experts from industry, government, and higher education. In all, 28 presenters combined to run 12 workshops - 6 for each of our novice and advanced students. Thank you to co-hosts George Mason University | Cyber Security Engineering and Loudoun County Public Schools, as well as Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Northern Virginia, Virginia Cyber Range, Vertex11, CACI International Inc, Claroty, CodeHS, Widelity, Inc., and GT Edge AI for sponsoring this wonderful event that in four years has impacted over 1,600 students. And, thank you to our exhibitors Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, @Mason Competitive Cyber, George Mason University - College of Engineering and Computing, GT Edge AI, and Virginia National Guard 91st Cyber Brigade. Yesterday, I saw first hand the future of cybersecurity while presenting at CyberSlam 2025 at George Mason University - College of Engineering and Computing! My sessions on Deep Fakes generated some interesting discussions with the students. I was impressed with how engaged and curious the entire group was. CyberSlam is an annual event that gives hundreds of students an opportunity to learn about cybersecurity research and career paths. This year there were 475 students from 22 schools across Virginia in attendance. Thanks to Chris Starke, Jennifer Marden, and all of the organizers for putting together such a successful event.

I'm excited to share that we are accepting applications for the Triple Point Security Summer 2025 cybersecurity internship program through the end of this month! We are especially looking for college students from Southwest Virginia institutions near our Blacksburg office who want to gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity, cloud security, and risk management. As the internship program manager, I’ve had the opportunity over the years to mentor some incredible students, helping them gain hands-on experience in cloud security, risk management, and emerging technologies.
