  • S1/Ep35: Construction is a complex world, where every project is a prototype and the supply chain booked to deliver it is both long and often untested. Any wonder then that the contracts that specify our work, anywhere within the supply chain are both long and relatively complex. These contracts are the preserve of lawyers who can help us set up a project, interpret the language that describes our agreements and occasionally help enforce them. Unfortunately, our industry has a love / hate relationship with the legal profession, yet they form an important part of our supply chain and corporate protection. Ruth Griffin and Jessica Tresham, both Partners at top law firm Gowling WLG, talk to Mark on how to get the best from the legal profession and why lawyers should be in the armoury of every business within the industry. They describe the importance of the personal relationship in deriving best value and how their clients use them to best effect. Their call to arms is for a busy, proactive industry that engages openly with clear risk transfer, using skilled people throughout. Not necessarily the call to arms that you might expect from two lawyers, one non-contentious and the other contentious! 🎧 Listen to the podcast by clicking in the comments below: #construction / #professionaldevelopment / #constructionindustry

  • 🔹 Championing Collaboration in Construction 🔹 Ele George is an advocate for built environment sector change, a sustainable and innovative construction specialist, founder of Elevate FBE Ltd, and one of the NFB Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction 2022. As a sustainability consultant and environmental engineer, she specialises in off-site systems and modern methods of construction (MMC), with a current focus on retrofitting. As a CE Midlands Diploma Alumnus, here’s what Ele had to say about the course: “I signed up to the diploma because I wanted to broaden my knowledge on collaborative practices within the construction sector. My main client is Energiesprong UK, for whom I fulfil the role of collaboration hub manager. The diploma is highly relevant to my work with the client, and therefore I was eager to learn more about creating a culture of collaborative working through the modules and apply the learnings accordingly. The sessions throughout the course were sufficiently in-depth and delivered to a high quality. They included details on each topic on collaboration in construction without being too long that it took a significant time out of my working day. Rather than a specific module, what I found most insightful is that there were several reoccurring themes running through each section. One such theme was that value-based decision making brings about the best outcomes for all – the construction workers, the client and the building users. Traditional cost-based decision making is the old approach, but for the best outcomes we must collaborate and embrace a new values-based approach, which is importantly stressed in the diploma.” Collaboration is the key to unlocking a more sustainable, efficient, and value-driven construction industry. The CE Midlands Diploma provides a deep dive into this crucial topic, equipping professionals with the tools to drive real change. 📌 Link in the comments for the full course brochure! ⬇️ #Construction #Sustainability #Collaboration #ModernMethodsOfConstruction #Retrofitting #Leadership #CEMidlands

🥁🥁🥁 Meet Joseph Butler ACIAT - Vice Chair “Hi, I'm Joe, an Architectural Technologist at Bond Bryan and Vice Chair of G4C Midlands. At Bond Bryan, my role involves working through the RIBA stages to develop designs, produce drawing packs, and coordinate essential project documentation. While I work across various projects, I have been heavily involved in retrofitting buildings, helping to breathe new life into structures that, in some cases, are over 200 years old. Bond Bryan’s ethos is "More than design"—we think beyond the building itself, considering the entire lifecycle of structures, their interaction with people, user experiences, and the lasting impact we create. My passion for both people and architecture drives my work, allowing me to influence projects meaningfully and share these interests with my peers. As many know, every day is a school day in architecture and even with the 4 years of experience I have within the industry, there is so much more to learn. Beyond my role at Bond Bryan, I’m also part of the incredible G4C Midlands committee. Together, we organize monthly events that foster knowledge-sharing and provide young professionals with valuable networking opportunities. Through our network, we’ve hosted fantastic free events, from site visits to the Octagon Tower to G4Coffee meetups, helping to create opportunities that might not exist without G4C. One of the things I love most about G4C is how it removes the pressure often associated with traditional networking. For many newcomers to the industry, including students, networking can feel intimidating—especially when engaging with professionals who have 10+ years of experience. At G4C, we focus on creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone, regardless of experience level, feels comfortable and encouraged to participate. Our goal is to build a community that fosters confidence and knowledge, ensuring that people not only enjoy attending but also keep coming back to grow both personally and professionally.” #meetthecommittee #youngprofessionals #constructionprofessionals #generation4change #constructingexcellence #committeevicechair

  • S1/Ep36: Dr. Caroline Gumble (Dr) has been the CEO of the Chartered Institute of Building for nearly six years. She has represented the institute both overseas and in the UK, giving her a great perspective on our relative strengths and weaknesses. In this podcast she outlines the areas that she has championed during her tenure and calls for more accountability and professionalism within construction generally. She acknowledges the progress that has been made and the companies and individuals who are driving positive change, but she is keen to point out that we can all be leaders in many ways, such as sustainability, EDI and accountability. Caroline is fiercely positive about the amazing things that our industry can achieve, both for our customers and our people. She does though recognise the challenges ahead and the need for all in the industry to collaborate to achieve these outcomes. Unlike many in the sector, Caroline champions diversity of trade body as well as individual, believing that the variety of leadership and priorities adds to the variety of solutions available to clients and our industry alike. 🎧 Listen to the podcast by clicking in the comments below: #construction / #professionaldevelopment / #equality / #diversity / #inclusion
