  • Continuing with Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we spoke to some of our members of staff about their personal experiences, and how their neurodiverse traits lend themselves to the construction industry. Today, we spoke to EHS, Risk and Opportunity Manager Sam... In the early stages of my career, I found my dyslexia to be a source of embarrassment. While I was academically capable, my written communication skills were limited, which made tasks like producing scientific reports at university and in my early career particularly challenging. This struggle affected my confidence and work performance. Over time, I’ve developed coping mechanisms—most importantly, learning to accept my limitations and recognising that my shortcomings don’t diminish my value. I’ve also cultivated skills like verbal communication and strategic planning to compensate for areas where I struggle, such as writing. Being a parent to a neurodiverse child, my son, who has autism and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), has also influenced my work life. Family is my priority, and balancing the needs of a child with additional challenges alongside a busy career has been impactful. I’m grateful for the flexibility Speller Metcalfe has provided, which has allowed me to prioritise my family when needed. Specific tasks, like taking meeting minutes or reading aloud in groups, remain challenging for me due to dyslexia, but I’ve embraced teamwork to overcome these hurdles. I now focus on my strengths, such as simplifying technical information, leading presentations, and fostering collaboration within teams. These challenges have also taught me to value the skills of others and rely on support when necessary. I didn’t disclose my dyslexia until I was around 30 years old, and even then, it was informal and tied to apologising for my “shoddy” work. The response has always been low-key, and I’ve realised it’s not a big deal to others. Since my son’s autism diagnosis, I’ve become more open about my neurodiversity. I feel there is still a stigma surrounding neurodiversity at work, particularly because admitting weaknesses can feel risky. However, I believe this internal fear of disclosure is often stronger than the actual external stigma. I’ve seen a positive shift in the acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity over my career. Simple adjustments can make an enormous difference for individuals, creating a more skilled and inclusive workforce. It’s refreshing to see workplaces becoming more open to these discussions, and I hope this trend continues to grow. #neurodiversitycelebrationweek

  • This Neurodiversity week, we're raising awareness of neurodiversity in the construction industry specifically. The construction industry has naturally become a field where many neurodiverse individuals can thrive, as it aligns with neurodiverse strengths, however there is still a lack of understanding around the different forms of neurodivergence... • The transformation of the Grade II Listed, Kidderminster Town Hall, is moving at pace and on target to re-open its doors in Autumn 2025. The redevelopment will see a complete refurbishment of the café area, transforming it into an indoor and outdoor space which can be further divided into separate areas for group entertainment. Throughout the building there are upgrades to the mechanical and electrical services, including the installation of a new lift, improved disabled entrances and refurbishment of ground floor toilet areas. The King Charles suite roof is also being restored with improvements in insulation features to make the room more energy efficient and welcoming. We are also restoring and cleaning the heritage features outside of the Town Hall to ensure they continue to stand the test of time. The redevelopment of one of Kidderminster’s most historic landmarks is being delivered by Kidderminster Town Council, who own the building, in partnership with Wyre Forest District Council. This is one of the major projects being funded through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund in Kidderminster. The Piano Building at Weavers Wharf is currently being upgraded ready to be occupied by food and beverage providers and first and second floor office space. This is work will be completed in July 2025. £17.9 million has been allocated across the schemes, with the Town Hall securing £8.5 million to support its sensitive regeneration.
