On Monday, August 19, the City of South Fulton Police Department gathered at Southwest Arts Center to honor retirements, promotions, and Citizens Academy graduates. City Manager Sharon Subadan recognized the honorees saying, “Your achievements today are a testament to your hard work, resilience, and the deep sense of duty you bring to protecting and serving the citizens of the City of South Fulton. The City of South Fulton has the privilege of celebrating one of Latin music's greatest names, Celia Cruz "The Queen of Salsa," throughout the month of September! "Azucar! A Journey of Latin Music and Culture" is a joyful exhibition coming September 18-28 to Southwest Arts Center. Named for her signature catchphrase, "¡Azucar!," the exhibition will feature photos, clothes, and memorabilia from her personal collection. Celia Cruz is the aunt of City of South Fulton District 7 Councilwoman, Linda Pritchett. Cruz was recently honored by the U.S. Treasury as the first Afro-Latina to be featured on a U.S. quarter. The currency will be on display at the exhibition. The celebration culminates in the annual celebration of Azucar Music Festival on Saturday, September 28 at Wolf Creek Amphitheater from 4:00 - 10:00 pm. The concert will feature performance by El Grupo Huellas (a bachata and merengue band), Jessica Diaz, and Tito Puente, Jr., whose father, the legendary Tito Puente, collaborated with Celia Cruz on her signature hit, "Bemba Colorá." The City of South Fulton, in partnership with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity International, announces the completion of its first-ever Habitat for Humanity home. On Saturday, August 10, a ceremony took place at the new build where the excited homeowner was given the keys to their first home. “A home provides a stable place for families to grow strong and make memories,” said City Manager Sharon Subadan. “We give thanks to all those who made it possible. Together we are making first-time homeownership a reality for a deserving family.” Several City of South Fulton employees volunteered at the site, going the extra mile to welcome our new residents. On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, the City of South Fulton Fire Rescue Department was honored to receive a donation from OmniTRAX. OmniTRAX manages 28 rail lines throughout the country, including 27 miles of track that service the businesses along Fulton Industrial Boulevard. The donation was made to the department in gratitude for their support during the railroad’s fire season. Chief Chad Jones thanked OmniTRAX for the donation and for their partnership in managing fire risk along their rail line. Funds from the donation will be used to purchase safety program equipment for the South Fulton Fire Rescue Department. The City of South Fulton has approved maintaining the current property tax millage rate of 12.399 mils, which will fund the fiscal year 2025 adopted budget. The City Council chose to hold the rate steady, rather than increase property taxes despite the City of South Fulton having slower tax digest growth, year-over-year. Each year, the City of South Fulton City Council reviews the millage rate, which is used to calculate property tax liability based on assessed property values. A “mil” equates to $1 per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. The revenue collected from this tax contributes to the city's General Fund, which supports essential services including the City of South Fulton Police Department, City of South Fulton Fire and Rescue, and the Parks and Recreation Department, among other public services.
