AI & beauty / IA et beauté 🤖 🤔 At the end of June, I had the pleasure of taking part in a round table on artificial intelligence and beauty organised by ingredients company Roquette Beauté and Re/Sources. Lawyer Matthieu Bourgeois analysed intellectual property issues and the risks for brands. Sociologist Rosalind Gill discussed human issues, in particular mental health in the face of virtual or augmented images. For my part, I presented the initiatives of various brands and composition houses. I also introduced participants to the three fragrances that I have co-created with AI. Every year, from May to the end of June, Turkey's Valley of Roses comes alive with the enchanting hand-harvesting of roses. In this iconic region, we meticulously select Rosa Damascena petals for our signature fragrance, Rose Ardoise. To capture the freshest essence, Turkish women pick the roses at dawn and carefully place them into gunny sacks. This artisanal skill, passed down through generations, allows us to preserve the pure and authentic essence of the rose. Through an original tailored process by Cosmo International Fragrances , perfumer Céline Perdriel re-explores the floral facets of the Damascena rose and preserved the fresh and delicate floral top notes.  For a bold interpretation of this timeless bloom, the perfumer has infused the fragrance with the exceptional Centifolia rose from Grasse, known for its rounded, warm, and honeyed facets. After hair products and makeup, #skinification is also getting to the #perfume category, blurring the boundaries with skincare. In line with this #trend, perfume companies are working hard to develop new technologies for alcohol-free, water-soluble #fragrances. This innovation with multiple benefits could foreshadow the future of the perfume industry. 👉 Alcohol-free fragrances are now appealing to a new customer base looking for a more intimate sensorial experience. 👉 These aqueous bases are just as suitable for fine perfumery as they are for hair and body care. 👉 Water-soluble fragrances also enjoy a positive image. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who visited us at the WORLD PERFUMERY CONGRESS in Geneva last week. For this new edition, we celebrated the “Latina Souls” of Latin America, a region full of olfactive treasures. Yannick Maestro, General Manager of our Natural Ingredients Division in Mougins, in the Grasse region, France, explains: “We wanted to highlight the rich biodiversity of the region but also the authentic olfactory heritage that is largely unsung in the Perfume industry. Each natural ingredient is a living soul that meets the hands of passionate individuals who take care of them. That is why we also wanted to pay homage to the local communities, these passionate souls that harvest our exclusive natural ingredients, who preserve their ancestral traditions, nurturing both the cultural and natural heritage of their territories.” With an unwavering commitment to traceability and sustainability in our supply chains, we have also invested in the region through two farms, one in Colombia and another in Peru, devoted to cultivating and sourcing exceptional natural raw materials through a unique “Latine” terroir. For the congress, four unique natural ingredients were selected from our exclusive palette of raw materials. These ingredients were showcased through their exceptional olfactory spirit, enhancing creations ranging from eau de toilette to candles. We also revealed one of our new natural ingredients for the first time: Petitgrain Lime Essence. Anne-Laure André, Project Manager at our Natural Ingredients Division, mentions: “We carefully cultivate lime trees on our COSMO Colombian farm. We extract their fresh leaves to obtain a rare extract of Petitgrain Lime essence, rich in fruity, zesty, and vegetal notes.” From the fertile land of Northern Peru, our rare Cacao Blanc CraftivityTM, derived from white cacao beans and developed in collaboration with a master chocolatier, re-explores balsamic notes, offering a rich yet gourmand scent. “We also presented our Schinus Molle MD ‘Molecular Distillation,’ originating from the sacred lands of the Incas in Peru, which reveals a spicy effervescence and delicate woody facets, whereas our Peruvian Ginger CO2 exudes the freshness of the highlands at the juncture of the Andes and the Amazon region, reflecting the vibrant soul of the forest”, mentions Anne-Laure André. In collaboration with The Fragrance Foundation’s Scents of Success program, our Regulatory Affairs Supervisor, Shabeer Wali, MS, an alumnus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, had the privilege of sharing his industry knowledge and experience at his alma mater in New Jersey. He was joined virtually by Max Rossa, our Junior Perfumer, and Salomé Henry-Comès, our Fragrance Evaluator, both from our Florida office. The Scents of Success program aims to help students establish careers in the fragrance industry, offering various entry paths and extensive opportunities for newcomers. The students were highly engaged and enthusiastic during our discussions and Q&A session, and our team enjoyed the interactions, answering all the questions posed. During the visit, students also had the opportunity to smell various raw materials and experience some finished products incorporating these ingredients. The fragrance industry is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, building teams that authentically reflect the richness of America's population. This dedication involves recruiting, training, and retaining a diverse workforce. We are grateful to the FDU Biology Department, particularly Marion McClary, Jr., Ph.D., and James Dougherty, for organizing this event in partnership with The Fragrance Foundation’s Scents of Success program.
