From in-state training programs to leadership development initiatives, we’re dedicated to equipping leaders with tools for effective governance and bridging divides.   This December at the CSG National Conference in New Orleans, our incoming national chair, Illinois Sen. Elgie Sims (Elgie Sims Jr.), is launching his chair's initiative on civility.   "Civility is the presence of respectful, empathetic and intentional behavior and dialogue that’s authentic,” Sims said.   Over the coming year, we’ll celebrate and elevate the stories of leaders like Sims who find common ground while working across the aisle and upholding our shared vision to advance the common good. #Civility #StateGovernments

To improve its high rates of incarceration and violent crime, Missouri began working with the CSG Justice Center through the Justice Reinvestment Initiative to evaluate its criminal justice system and develop policy recommendations. Since JRI legislation passed in 2018, Missouri’s prison population has declined by 28 percent. The state has also scaled up investments in community-based treatment systems and supervision programs, modernized parole processes, and increased support for law enforcement and victims to address the root causes of violent crime. The success of these programs has increased access to substance use treatment for people on supervision, and the state has committed additional support for programs that improve outcomes for people in the criminal justice system. Mental health matters. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported that 57.8 million adults in the U.S. lived with a mental illness in 2021, yet only 26.5 million received #MentalHealth services. How are states working to address these disparities in mental health care access? Massachusetts SB 3097 (2022) created a clear structure for the Division of Insurance to receive and investigate parity complaints and requires student health insurance plans to comply with the federal MHPAEA. Oregon SB 455 (2015) mandated employers with 10 or more employees provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave annually for all employees. https://lnkd.in/ecrhR8-w
