One of our favorite things about 3D creation is the way that giving learners the same guidelines yields dramatically different results when you’re working in an environment that supports playful experimentation. We love the funny, creative, weird, beautiful, unexpected things our creators come up with - check out a few of them in our Launchpad Philly 3D creator program week 4 optional challenge showcase of the week!

Opportunities in 3D are exploding - just like our Launchpad creators’ custom visual effects! During session 3 of our 3D Creator Program with Launchpad Philly, we introduced creators to different ways to build dynamic and visually interesting 3D environments. Our optional challenge module for the week - creating custom particle emitters - yielded some very cool results! Check them out!

Our hardworking, creative, and beyond talented interns are at the heart of our work to engage beginners in 3D creation. They develop and deliver our educational microcourses, inform our direction every step of the way, and keep our work lighthearted and engaging. We wouldn’t be where we are without them, and wish them all a happy #NationalInternshipDay with our deepest gratitude!

This week at Launchpad’s 3D Creator Program, we introduced new creators to 3D modeling using photogrammetry, NeRFs, modeling tools within #UEFN, and exploring asset libraries. We offered an additional optional challenge: create a model in Blender. Several students accepted our challenge, and made these awesome snowmen (and one really cool helmet!). We’re happy to share the Challenge Showcase of the Week, with huge props to the creators who were willing to try something new (and knock it out of the park)! We’re very grateful for our amazing Blender whiz intern, Josh DeStefano, who thrives on a challenge himself, and who came up with the idea for Challenge Modules, created the Blender tutorial video for this challenge, and produced this video showcase.

Overheard at Launchpad’s 3D Creator Program, Day 2: "I’ll use Extrude to make the shapes for the face.” "Instead of making another arm, I’m just going to group the parts of the arm, and then duplicate them and rotate the group.” “I found this in the asset library, but I don’t like the table so I’m going to import a different one I found.” “I turned off Grid Snapping so I could move the model the way I wanted.” “How can I use this image to make a texture?” “Can I work on the Challenge Module at home?” We founded CreateAccess with the belief that, if we engage learners with limited previous exposure to 3D, we would find curious, motivated, talented people who could create amazing things with a little help and scaffolding to get them started. In just a few hours with Launchpad’s students, we’ve again seen that our founding belief was right. The students - nearly all of them complete beginners in 3D creation - exceeded our already-high expectations, and blew us away with how quickly they learned, applied, and moved beyond the core concepts we introduced. Their readiness to experiment, explore, take on a challenge, and embrace the playful, creative spirit of our programs energized and inspired us. We hope and believe that they had as much fun as our team did! Stay tuned for more about their continued rapid progress in the coming weeks. Great article from Technical.ly Philly on our early programs with CreateAccess to expose young people to 3D creation, including one of my favorites: we did a 3D creator program with our local boxing gym, Delco Boxing Academy, to teach the basics of photogrammetry, motion capture, etc. to the kids training at the gym and to the kids of parents who train there. We had great fun bringing in folding tables, chairs, and laptops to set up the temporary creator lab and even ran the Internet off of cell phones at one point. Check out the article for more programs from Liz Dailey and the team. https://lnkd.in/eCTw2jU5

CreateAccess had an exciting week last week kicking off our collaboration with Launchpad Philly, a “learn-and-earn” workforce development program that prepares students from underrepresented groups for well-paying careers in tech. We joyfully welcomed second-year Launchpad student Kareem Moore to our team as a summer intern. Kareem is an avid gamer and aspiring game developer with experience creating in Unity. Welcome Kareem! We also held the first session of our 3D creator program with Launchpad students. The students will spend 6 days with us this summer creating their own customized “Me Islands” in #UEFN! During our introductory day together, students explored “CreateAccess Island,” an interactive Fortnite island built by our team that featured each team member and a series of quests that brought to life the 3D skills the students will learn with us. The students then got a taste of how quickly they can get started with 3D creation by experimenting with UEFN, Polycam, Blender, and Ready Player Me. Tomorrow the students will start building their Me Islands. We can’t wait to see the creative ways that they will use foundational 3D creation techniques to build unique and personal experiences, and to learn skills that generalize across tools and industries. Stay tuned as we continue on our journey together this summer! Big thanks to Nick Imparato, Sanaa Igbokwe, Dannyelle Austin, and the rest of the Launchpad team for this opportunity!

After a great summer filled with learning and establishing our foundations in 2023, we're thrilled to expand our intern team and continue to focus our efforts in 2024! On their first day, our new team members Lara Rende and Jillian Rayca enthusiastically jumped into our first summer project, ready to collaborate and share their knowledge, creativity, and ideas. We're so fortunate that such awesome people want to use their talent to help broaden access to 3D creation. And, as always, we're so glad to have our continuing team members still working with us! They've been such an important part of our journey and we can't wait to see what we'll continue to accomplish together. Kevin Quinn, Ed. D. We are so happy and grateful to announce the official launch of CreateAccess! Founded by Liz Dailey and Patrick Cozzi, CreateAccess is a nonprofit that broadens access to opportunities in 3D by providing onramps to 3D creation through exposure education. Our freely-available, beginner-friendly microcourses introduce new creators to professional 3D tools with step-by-step, personally-relevant projects that they can complete on their own or through programs in their school or community. For the past year, we’ve been establishing our model, developing microcourse materials, and facilitating in-person 3D creator programs. We hope and believe that we’ve helped lower barriers for new creators, ignited their curiosity, and built their confidence that they can be part of the dynamic and growing 3D community. CreateAccess is just getting started, and we’re thrilled by the momentum and excitement we’ve seen so far. Our first microcourses helped creators bring objects from their own lives into 3D experiences using Polycam and Unreal Editor for Fortnite. We can’t wait to build more microcourses and continue to cultivate a community that helps pave the way for anyone who wants to enter the field. To the many folks who have encouraged, connected, collaborated, and offered their time and expertise to us, please know that your support means the world. Early supporters include:    -Our microcourse implementation partners, including Malvern Preparatory School, Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation, Upper Darby Library, Delco Boxing Academy, and Kean University -Daniel Haehn and Funda Durupinar from UMass Boston, who adapt our microcourses for their classes and invite students to contribute their own content -Rowan University and Lincoln University, who enthusiastically gave us space to share our mission and model -The education team at Epic Games, including Steve Isaacs, Cathy Cheo-Isaacs, and Julie Lottering, who creatively and meaningfully engage and uplift creators of all experience levels, and who give us platforms to share our work -Lori Cushman and her amazing gift for bringing people with shared vision together -Maker Camp and Lega Scolastica eSports, who trusted us to provide educational materials for their learners -Bentley Systems, who generously donated office space for our summer team, connected us to impactful collaborators, and hosted an early microcourse pilot Our incredible team of educators, technologists, student interns, volunteers, and board members have worked tirelessly with us to build our foundations. Thank you so so much for believing in something you couldn’t yet see, and taking a chance offering your time and talent to support something new. We couldn’t do it without you. 3D creation is for everyone. Join us on our journey to broaden access to 3D creation and help close opportunity gaps in tech.
