The Serious Play Conference, now in our 18th year, is a leadership conference for professionals who embrace the idea that games can revolutionize learning. Speakers, who come from all parts of the globe, share their experience creating or using games in the corporation, classroom, healthcare institution, government and military and offer tips on how to move game-based education programs ahead. At Serious Play, attendees listen, share and participate actively in informal sessions dedicated to the discussion of the future of serious games.

I saw what Mark and his team are up to at Serious Play Conference this year, and it is some incredibly fun stuff! Games for change are on the move, and projects like this bring me a ton of hope on how we as a society and culture can view games and play!
As most of you know, I believe that video games hold immense potential as a tool for promoting climate action. Addressing misconceptions, this paper explores the positive impacts of gaming. Contrary to common fears, data shows a decline in violent crimes among youth alongside the rise of gaming, challenging the belief that gaming leads to aggression. Moreover, multiplayer games can create a sense of belonging and acceptance within online communities, fostering positive social connections for players. A recent Yale Program on Climate Change Communication study suggests that video game enthusiasts exhibit a greater inclination towards climate action, highlighting the medium's potential to inspire change. Young people, who are eager to drive climate initiatives, can be engaged through their love for gaming. Initiatives like what we are doing at Earthshot embedding cleantech solutions in games like Fortnite showcase the power of gaming in sparking imagination and innovation for a sustainable future. By integrating climate technologies into popular games, we can harness the enthusiasm of the younger generation, demonstrating how collective actions in virtual worlds can translate into real-world impact on climate change.

At this month’s Lunch & Learn, we had the pleasure of hearing Travis W. Windleharth from foundry10 present on how players build mental models through #play and how he approaches analysis. Travis conducts qualitative research of players mental models through #TAIPA or Talk Aloud Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. There were lots of points of connection including Piaget, Flow Theory, #Constructivism, and Mayer's research. The team, and especially our game designers and developers, appreciated Travis’ insights and had lots of questions! 🌟 Terrible Workers team is going to Denmark! 🌟 After winning 3rd prize at the Serious Play Conference, our game has now been nominated as a finalist at the 18th European Conference on Game Based Learning (ECGBL 2024) hosted by Aarhus University, Denmark! 🎉 This journey has been nothing short of incredible. A heartfelt thanks to Matthew Callison, and James Hausman from South Fayette Township School District. They started as our capstone clients, but their unwavering dedication and collaboration transformed them into invaluable partners. Their support allowed us to research, prototype, and test our game with high school students, resulting in a truly impactful product. Their continued support has been instrumental in helping us reach more students through their networks. Our participation in the ECBGL Conference in Denmark is a significant achievement, made possible by the #MHCI program at Carnegie Mellon University. I'm proud to announce that my team's tabletop game, Terrible Workers, has been awarded recognition at this year's Serious Play Conference! Terrible Workers is a card game which uses humor and pitching to subtly teach the importance of interpersonal skills. When my grad school capstone team at the #MHCI design program started designing in collaboration with South Fayette Township School District for students to develop a growth mindset, I would have never imagined that it would lead us to create an analog game that we are still actively expanding to this day, one year after graduation, even after all of us have moved onto different full-time UX/product design careers. Shoutout to my amazing team (Archana Ramakrishnan, Manvi Gupta, Simran Chawla, Jenny Liu) for showing me what happens when a group of truly passionate and wholesome people with diverse skillsets come together to create something fun and meaningful. I'm very thankful for the #MHCI program at Carnegie Mellon University for bringing us together, encouraging us to think through a holistic service design lens rather than simply being constrained to digital screens, and introducing us to the world of serious games that help teach valuable life lessons. As part of our accessibility in gaming series, a special mention to Pearl Interactives and Bootle Blast I had the chance to connect with the team at Pearl Interactives during the Serious Play Conference in Toronto. They focus on creating interactive media for children of all abilities, which helps empower them in play, wellness, and learning. One of their notable games is *Bootle Blast*. This mixed-reality video game combines gaming with therapeutic measures, designed to help improve the motor skills of children with physical disabilities like cerebral palsy. Bootle Blast enables differently-abled individuals to play together, promoting social equalization among participants. It’s a game that families can use at home, allowing siblings to join in and play together.
