A studio and gallery in Oakland, CA, celebrating 50 years of supporting 140+ artists with developmental disabilities.

About us

Creative Growth Art Center is the house that art built. For 50 years, we've served artists with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities, offering a professional studio environment where art knows no limits. Here, over 140 artists explore a wide range of media, from fiber arts and painting to ceramics and digital arts. Our gallery, the world’s oldest dedicated to artists with disabilities, hosts four annual exhibitions right here in Oakland, while our artists’ works reach far beyond, finding homes in prominent collections and museums worldwide. At Creative Growth, we believe in the power of art to connect, inspire, and redefine what's possible. After all, a little paint goes a long way—and sometimes, so does a whole lot of heart. Creative Growth is proud to be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

  • At Creative Growth, art and advocacy go hand in hand! 🤝 This past week, our amazing artist Eli Cooper and his mom, Jennifer, presented to a 3rd grade class at Thornhill Elementary in honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Through their advocacy, they’re raising awareness about people with Down syndrome, showcasing their abilities, and promoting inclusion in our very own community. We’re so proud of Eli and all he’s doing to make the world a more inclusive place for everyone. _ Image description: Man presenting in front of a classroom of third graders. #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth #EliCooper #CreativeGrowth

It's National Disability Employment Awareness Month! At Creation Studio, adults with disabilities are not just given the opportunity for creative expression and growth – they are given the opportunity to be working artists. For neurotypical people, the pursuit of a career as an artist is already challenging enough. For the disabilities community, there are additional obstacles that keep many unbelievably talented + creative individuals from not just sharing their art with the world but supporting themselves through their gift. At Creation Studio, we believe that one's disabilities should not hold them back from the same opportunities that a neurotypical person has. We're so excited to be a space where artists with disabilities can be supported in their careers as artists. This October, we celebrate that (in addition to the wonderful fall weather coming our way!!) Art by Nathaniel Jackson, a practicing artist at Creative Growth Art Center

  • Experience the inspiring journey of artist William Scott as he walks through downtown Oakland and enters the doors of Creative Growth Art Center. In this beautifully shot short film, created by the John McNeil Studio team, we follow William's voice and perspective as he reflects on how CG provides a space for marginalized individuals to grow, explore, and fully express themselves as bonafide artists. This is more than just a film—it's a testament to the belief that art can create a better world for everyone. Don't miss this glimpse into how Creative Growth supports different voices and champions disability inclusion in the art world. 🌟 https://lnkd.in/g4Q834JP
