As a parent, I've found that nothing is more valuable than watching your child explore the world with interested, open eyes. This year's World Sight Day theme, "Love Your Eyes, Kids," is particularly relevant, reminding us of the importance of nurturing and protecting the gift of sight from an early age. I am one of the blessed ones to work in eye care with Cure Blindness Project, whose aim to end needless blindness feels more important than ever. Whether it's a youngster seeing their family clearly for the first time after a simple cataract surgery or a village finally having access to quality eye care, every step we take is about restoring people's vision—and their future. Millions of youngsters worldwide are at risk of losing their sight due to preventable reasons. But we are working hard to alter that. From India to Ethiopia, and many more places in between, we provide eye tests, surgeries, and education to ensure that no one, particularly our children, is left in the darkness of preventable blindness. So, today, as we commemorate World Sight Day, let us pledge to "love our eyes" and protect the vision of future generations. The world is such a beautiful place when we can all see it clearly—and every child deserves that opportunity. Today, Thursday 10th, on World Sight Day, I shine a light on the significance of eye care in young people and encourage children worldwide to cherish their eyes. I am honored to be part of India's oldest and most esteemed eye hospitals, committed to enhancing vision and changing lives for future generations. SCEH, with support from philanthropists and partners, has restored sight and transformed lives of millions of people, from the Presidents of India to the not-so-privileged alike. In celebration of #WorldSightDay (October 10), Cure Blindness Project is excited to share news of our plans to bring sight-restoring services to six new countries around the world: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Pakistan, Paraguay, and Zambia. “The time has come to amplify our impact,” declares K-T Overbey, CEO of Cure Blindness Project. “From tackling cataract blindness in the Himalayas to now tackling all forms of treatable blindness across 30 countries, our commitment to eradicating this issue is unwavering. We are relentless in our pursuit of a brighter ‘seeable’ future for all, but we cannot do it alone.” #LoveYourEyes

October is Blindness Awareness Month World Sight Day 2024 focuses on children’s eye health. Cure Blindness Project believes restoring sight to a child puts that child on a better path for life. + 450 million children have a sight condition that requires treatment but lack access to affordable, available eye care.  + Children in low- and middle-income countries with vision loss are 2-5X less likely to be in school.  + Every day, young people miss out on learning and social opportunities because of a vision issue that could be treated, corrected and often cured. 

2023 marked another successful year for Cure Blindness Project, formerly Himalayan Cataract Project, as we continued to expand its impact across South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa to help people retain and restore their sight. Congratulations to Dr. Sam Cady for receiving  the 2024 Alumni Humanitarian Award at Upstate Medical University (Norton College of Medicine) as part of their September alumni celebrations! Sept 27, Kigali, Rwanda Honored to be invited to join Prof John Nkurikiye Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO) Founding Director, as Invited VIP Guest at the 2024 Presentation of Awards to RIIO’s graduates. The graduating class includes four Rwandans and two international residents from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. RIIO has now trained 19 specialists, with plans to increase that number to 25 in the near future. College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (#COECSA) leaders, Head of the #RwandanOphthalmologySociety, and Dr Innocent HABIMANA the Eye Health Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator at Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) were in attendance and very supportive of this home-grown initiative that will certainly help combat avoidable blindness in Rwanda and beyond. Last week Dr. Abeba Teklegiorgis, a Glaucoma Surgeon from Addis Ababa University visited our institution (Mekelle University). During her one week long stay with our residents the range of activities included : *Hands-on training on Trabeculectomy. *Lectures on steps of Trabeculectomy and common complications, the use of mitomycin-C in glaucoma, approach to Glaucoma patients, Childhood Glaucoma, and Pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma. *Consultation on all spectrum of Glaucoma patients in the Clinic with demonstration of preoperative counseling and post operative follow up. *Public awareness creation about glaucoma on a local public media. Our residents and faculty members expressed how Dr. Abeba's expertise and mentorship helped them build their confidence and their approach to Glaucoma care. It is amazing how a well organized and dedicated activities in a week can be fruitful in resource limited residency programs like ours. We have witnessed this in a series of guest visitors by Drs Kumale Tolesa and David Khorram as well. We are so grateful for our dedicated guests and Cure Blindness Project for helping us strengthen our residency program by making these events happen.
