It's an exciting time for Dartmouth Cancer Center as we expand access to oncology services in southern New Hampshire. Last week, we celebrated the expansion of our radiation and oncology unit at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics Manchester, just in time for our clinical and hematology/oncology infusion services in Manchester moving to the clinic from the Notre Dame Pavilion at CMC. "This allows all of cancer care to be under one roof: Dartmouth surgeons, gynecologic oncologists, hematologists, medical oncologists, internists and now a radiation company," Charles Thomas Jr., MD, chair of radiation oncology and applied sciences, told ManchesterInkLink.com. "All patients that have cancer will require some of those services during their journey, so this (expansion) will help minimize their fragmentation of care." https://lnkd.in/eee3WQKs 📷: Andrew Sylvia via Manchester Ink Link (above)

In August, Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics patient Bill "Spaceman" Lee was the guest of honor at our annual Love Your Heart Night with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Bill came to DHMC earlier this year after a complicated artery blockage threatened to end the southpaw pitcher's five-decade baseball career, after several other hospitals declined to take his case. Hannah Chaudry, MD, an interventional cardiologist with DHMC's Heart & Vascular Center—and fellow lefty—was able to fix Bill's heart, allowing him to return to the mound once more. WMUR-TV sports director Mike Cronin sat down with Bill at the game as he prepared to throw out the first pitch. True to his nickname, Bill's signature "Leephus pitch" and zest for life are out of this world! Click here to watch their colorful conversation on "New Hampshire Chronicle." ⚾❤️

Thank you, APPs! National Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Week, celebrated the 4th week of September, recognizes APPs for their contributions to healthcare. More than 40% of the providers across Dartmouth Health are APPs—nearly 850 strong—working in every location and clinical setting. Our APPs include Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) which include Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA). APPs can diagnose and treat health conditions, prescribe medication, perform a range of medical procedures, and more. We are grateful to the Dartmouth Health APPs around the system for the amazing work they do! The Dartmouth Cancer Center highlighted APPs for their unique contributions to the care and support of patients and the unique role they play in our clinical teams. "People should not be afraid of mental illness. They should not be afraid of people with mental illness. They should not be afraid of guns. Guns are tools. But you should be afraid of the mixture of a gun and a behavioral health crisis." Dartmouth Health psychiatrist Jeffrey Fetter, M.D., is one of many Dartmouth Health clinicians who staff New Hampshire Hospital, the state-run acute psychiatric care facility. Dr. Fetter was also one of many Dartmouth Health staff members who were present at NHH on November 17, 2023, when a former patient walked into the lobby with a handgun and shot and killed security guard Bradley Haas, who was unarmed. The shooter was then shot and killed by a New Hampshire State Police trooper stationed at NHH. In a recent interview with WMUR-TV, Dr. Fetter candidly shared his recollections of what happened that day. We thank Dr. Fetter for his bravery and advocacy on behalf of people experiencing mental illness, and to ensure that patients and staff in healthcare facilities can be and feel safe. (Trigger warning: This article and video detail gun violence and Dr. Fetter's experience as a survivor of a hospital shooting.)

It's a tale as old as time: when a generation enters adulthood, their elders generalize and criticize. Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials have complained as Generation Z has entered the workforce that many of these young adults lack work ethic and time management skills. As Carolyn Isabelle, our vice president of talent and career development, told Becker's Healthcare, she finds that Gen Z's desire to have an impact and make the world a better place is one of its strengths. She encourages leaders to focus on continued skill development and guidance for their Gen Z workforce. "Healthcare can be a challenging industry and it can be overwhelming to start," Isabelle said. "As leaders, we need to foster an environment that promotes learning, where questions can be asked and we prioritize the sharing of knowledge."

🤧 The brutal summer heat receding is a relief to many in New England, but for allergy sufferers, the misery has just begun. The third week of September is known as "peak week" for people with asthma and seasonal allergies, with ragweed pollen counts at their highest point of the entire year and mold counts going up as leaves begin to fall. Emergency departments see more allergy and asthma patients this week than any other of the year. At Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics, allergist Erin Reigh, MD, MS, is leading an effort to help researchers better understand seasonal allergies, which hopefully will lead to relief for patients. Dr. Reigh had a pollen counting station installed on the DHMC roof, where she will collect samples to send back to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology - AAAAI's National Allergy Bureau. Dr. Reigh's station is the only one in New England, she told the Valley News. “When patients would come in, they would often talk about the pollen,” she said. “I always thought, I would love to be able to answer what they’re saying with some actual data.” https://lnkd.in/eb5edShq
