Maybe it doesn’t look that bad outside during wildfire season... but is it healthy to breathe? On NPR's All Things Considered, Alejandra Borunda discusses the long term health effects wildfires cause, not just to our land, but on us people and animals! She mentions that wildfire smoke is nastier than pollution from other sources. Modern wildfires burn not just trees but also everything in our homes, making the smoke even riskier. Breathing in wildfire smoke causes lung inflammation, and can have wide ranging effects on how you feel. This isn't just a generic health concern; it's a crisis. Think of this as if everyone picked up a habit of constantly smoking for weeks on end. "This year Heft-Neal and some colleagues looked at how U.S. air quality has changed in the past few decades since the 1990s, when the country's landmark Clean Air Act was updated. Overall, since then, the country's air was getting much better every year. But since 2015, wildfire smoke from Western burns has erased about two decades worth of improvements. We're still figuring out how heavy exposure affects health over time, especially for kids who breathe in more smoke than adults.", says Borunda. Wildfire smoke is a bigger health risk than we thought. We gotta act fast, control fires, and tackle climate change to keep ourselves safe. The Ramona Sentinel reported that the Delphire Inc Sentinel FD3 demonstrated its real-world effectiveness!    The Sentinel did its job, from over 5 miles away, rapidly picking up the smoke as it came over the crest and immediately alerting of the risk. While this was a prescribed burn, if it was a real fire near your community, you'd need to know! 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟲𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀? Let's first explain what WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) is: WUI is the transition zone between unoccupied land and human development. Unlike what many think, it's not just a concern in Western states; it affects communities across North America. Here are some key facts according to U.S. Fire Administration: •More than 60,000 communities in the United States WUI are at risk of wildfires. •Structural Loss: Between 2002 and 2016, over 3,000 WUI structures per year were lost to fires in the US alone. •Expanding Danger: As more homes are built, the WUI area is growing by approximately 2 million acres annually, impacting more regions. As the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) expands, fire departments must assess and proactively reduce the area's fire risk. This also further stretches already overtaxed resources. Mitigating WUI risks requires collaboration between fire departments and communities, creating fire-adapted communities to enhance region-wide fire prevention in the US. Unfortunately, insurance companies are withdrawing from California. Stay tuned for next week's post to learn more! Delphire Inc is here to give you more time when it's truly needed.
