As our eighth year of hosting interns comes to a close, we want to express a giant THANK YOU to the three students who spent their summer with us in Maryland! It was a privilege to work with and have Gaurav Dutta, Gabriella Dodd, and Javier Agustín Chasco on the team. We wish all three continued success with their Ph.D. programs at University of Connecticut, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Guelph.

🔥 The effects of heat stress go beyond the cow herself. Recent studies from Dr. Jimena Laporta's lab provide evidence to the effects of heat stress on future generations. Graduate student Grace Larsen's study found that "Late-gestation heat stress seems to create hidden multigenerational effects that contribute to HTF2 heifers “passing under the radar,” leading to cows entering the lactating herd at a disadvantage, and ultimately leaving less milk in the bulk tank." Anne Rosi Guadagnin, a prior post-doctoral fellow in the department, found in her study that "Maternal exposure to heat stress during late gestation caused an enlargement of their offspring's adrenal glands by inducing ZG and ZF cell hypertrophy, and caused gene expression changes. These phenotypic, histological, and molecular changes in the adrenal gland might lead to alterations in stress, immune, and metabolic responses later in life." Our President and CEO, Dennis Vignieri, recently attended a regional Meat Institute meeting at the newly established University of Wisconsin-Madison Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery building.    Dennis' father, Charlie, generously contributed to the construction of this state-of-the-art facility. His donation reflects the family's history of dedication to fostering education and innovation within our industry.    The establishment is designed to advance research, education, and outreach in meat science. Reducing heat gain and promoting heat loss are two critical goals of heat abatement strategies. Jennifer Van Os, assistant professor and extension specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences, and her team explored both active and passive methods of heat reduction, focusing on the passive and natural ventilation potential within calf hutches in a recent article in the #JournalofDairyScience (https://lnkd.in/g-AJqyqR). As the calf behavior was monitored, it became evident that calves preferred the passively ventilated hutch during their weaning and postweaning period. https://lnkd.in/gKuum2zX
